This week welcomes the year 2018. Workers and employees in Metro Manila enjoy their free time and vacation as January 1 is a holiday. Authorities have also lifted the number coding scheme in the Metro during this holiday.
New Year
January 1 is a non-working holiday.
It is officially the start of 2018. The New Year symbolizes new beginnings and fresh opportunities. Some employees are enjoying their extended holiday vacations, while students are also taking a break from school. Since the 1st is a holiday, families can spend time together in hotels, resorts, malls, parks, or even just at home.
In other news, several banks such as Banco De Oro (BDO), EastWest Bank, Maybank, Security Bank, UnionBank, and United Coconut Planters Bank (UCPB) won’t be open on January 1 and will resume operations on January 2.
Number coding lifted
Some of the roads in Manila are not that congested due to the holidays.
The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) said that number coding would be suspended in cities and municipalities in Metro Manila including Las Piñas and Makati on January 1. The implementation also took effect last December 25 and 26 for the holidays.
In other news, those who are planning to have night out should watch their alcohol intake as the MMDA and the Philippine National Police (PNP) will apprehend drunk drivers who will be caught starting this January 2018.
Pancit Malabon

A dish that one can enjoy during the holiday is pancit Malabon, a Filipino favorite merienda (snack) staple that originated in Malabon. The difference between the usual pancit (noodles) and pancit Malabon is that the latter is filled with seafood as its city of origin, Malabon, thrives on fishing. The dish includes shrimps, eggs, thick noodles, parsley, tinapa (smoked fish) flakes, and chicharon (pork rinds).

One thing to do this new year is to revisit local history. Paco Park and Cemetery is a simple and tranquil park located within Paco Manila. Along with its beauty, the park is also filled with rich history. During the Spanish colonial period, the park served as a cemetery for the affluent and aristocratic members of the society. Later on, the cemetery was declared as a National Historical Shrine as the remains of Dr. Jose Rizal and three Filipino martyr priests were buried here.
The entrance fee for the park is at PhP10 per head and it is open from Tuesdays to Sundays from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Those commuting from Manila only needs to take a jeep bound for Taft Avenue to get there. Drop off at Escoda Street and walk to reach Paco Park.
Yema Cake

Yema cake combines two sweets: yema (candy made of egg yolks, condensed milk, and butter) and cake. It is often composed of yema icing, grated cheese, and soft chiffon cake. This pastry hails from Quezon but there are various bakeshops in Manila that sell yema cakes for pasalubong (take-home gifts) to loved ones at home.
Disney On Ice Everyone's Story

For one last hurrah with the whole family before school and work resumes, Disney On Ice’s Everyone’s Story will be on show from January 1 to 3 at the SM Mall of Asia Arena. More than 50 Disney characters will appear on the rink, including Disney’s mascot Mickey Mouse, Disney Princesses such as Cinderella, Rapunzel, Snow White, Ariel, Elsa, and Anna.

Cloudy skies with occasional light showers
Although it is cloudy, there would be occasional drizzles in the afternoons.
The year will start off with a mostly cloudy weather that will persist all throughout the entire week. On Tuesday to Friday, there will be light showers in some parts of the Metro. The highest temperature for the week will be at 31 °C while the lowest temperature will be at 28 °C. Those who will venture on road trips and outdoor events should have umbrellas in case of light rain.
