The beach season is finally upon us, which means people are rushing to spend their long weekends nestled in their favorite summer spots. But before you go on a road trip with your family and friends, of course you’ll have to prepare a bunch of things first, and this doesn’t mean just packing things, but preparing yourself as well!

Check this ultimate guide and see what things you have to add to your beach vacation checklist to make your trip this summer one to remember!

1. Schedule a hair removal appointment.

Tidy things up so you’ll be ready to show off that bikini body.

Summer season is bikini season, and if you plan on showing off your newest bikini on your next beach trip, make sure to stay smooth and clean, especially on your armpits, legs, and bikini area. For unwanted hair in your armpits and bikini area, the best option is to have it waxed, but make sure they are long enough if you don’t want it to hurt. For the legs, you can have them shaved but make sure your razors aren’t dull to avoid cutting or bruising.

Also, make sure to schedule your hair removal sessions at least two to three days before your beach trip to give your skin ample time to heal.

Where to get waxed: Strip Manila (prices start at PhP250)

2. Buy a summer outfit.

Your summer outfits should not just be good for photos but should be good for your protection as well.

It’s not necessary to buy something new every time you hit the beach, but if you haven’t gone to the beach in a long time and your trip is coming soon, now might be the best time to revamp your summer wardrobe. Some items you should consider buying include cover ups, sun hats, and sunglasses to protect you from the sun.

And of course, choose the best kind of swimwear, one that is glamorous but also comfortable to wear. For women worried about their bodacious chests, avoid string bikinis and go for something with more support. For flat-chested women, go with something that will give the illusion that you have a bigger chest, like a ruffled bikini. For men, the good old board shorts are a trending favorite nowadays.

Where to buy: Uniqlo (prices start at PhP590)

3. Pack a sunscreen.

Protect your skin from the sun’s harmful rays by using sunscreen.

Basking under the sun means that you will be more exposed to the sun’s harmful rays, so you need to have products to help protect your skin. If you plan to run along the beach and splash under the searing sun, a good rule of thumb is to choose a sunscreen with an SPF (sun protection factor) of 30 to 50.

Also, apply sunscreen on your skin at least 30 minutes before hitting the sun, so it’s best to do it while you are still at home instead of before hitting the waters. Make sure to put it even in the most inconspicuous places like your ears, and reapply every two hours.

Recommended product: Belo SunExpert SPF50 Transparent Mist (PhP449.75)

4. Protect your lips and hair, too.

Your hair and lips dry out too!

Although the skin is the top priority to protect whenever we hit the beach, our hair and lips need some moisturizing too. To avoid drying out your hair, make sure to bring along a leave-in conditioner as a protection from the sun as well as a barrier from the salt water.

As for your lips, wearing something as simple as lip balm is enough to protect it from drying out or chapping. You can start applying it the minute you leave the house and not just when you’re about to hit the beach. Also, make sure to re-apply at least every two hours.

Recommended leave-in conditioner: Bed Head Superstar Leave-In Conditioner (PhP1,930)
Recommended lip balm: Carmex Original Squeeze Tube (PhP139)

5. Bring your gadgets.

Capture every moment of your summer adventure by bringing your gadgets with you.

Every summer trip is filled with memorable events, so make sure to bring your trusty cameras and smartphones to capture every moment. The must-haves are, of course, your mobile phones and chargers, but make sure to bring power banks in case you’re going camping and the energy source is limited. You can also bring portable Wi-Fi so you can stay connected and immediately post those stunning selfies even when you’re on vacation somewhere far away.

Since you’ll be near water, make sure to waterproof all your gadgets by sealing them inside waterproof cases or in a Ziploc bag.

Recommended waterproof bag: CD-R King Waterproof Multi-Purpose Bag (PhP150)

6. Grab a book.

Relax in between swimming and playing around and just chill with a good book.

Going to the beach, above all else, should be a relaxing and enjoyable experience. Instead of filling your itinerary with action-packed activities, why not tone it down a bit? Just sit back, relax, and sip a cold drink. To complete this tranquil retreat, what’s better than bringing out your current book and reading it with the sound of lapping waves in the background?

Read along the pool or beach while you’re sunbathing and just enjoy your much-needed vacation. Reading is proven to reduce stress and most people consider it to be therapeutic. You can bring your favorite paperback, or if you don’t want your pages to be wet, stow along an e-reader or a digital tablet and just download the books you want to read.

Recommended e-book reader: Amazon Kindle Paperwhite (PhP7,600)

7. Stay hydrated.

Make sure you’re hydrated to stay on top of your game during your entire trip!

Although it’s often overlooked, staying hydrated at the beach is still very important. Extreme heat and intense activities like swimming and surfing can dehydrate you quickly, so you need to replace lost liquids by drinking water regularly. Also, in case you and your friends plan to drink alcohol during your overnight stay at the beach, hydrating yourselves becomes all the more important, as liquor drains our body of water.

Aside from bringing water, you can also include water-packed fruits and veggies on your trip. Vegetables like cucumber, lettuce, and tomatoes contain high amounts of water, just as much fruits like watermelons, strawberries, and pineapple, so try to bring a bagful of these along.

Recommended item: Coleman 1 Gallon Jug (PhP1,110)

8. Keep a hygiene kit or toiletries with you.

Bring back all the moisture you lost after a day of swimming with your hygiene kit.

After spending a day at the beach or even in a pool, it’s still necessary to take a bath afterwards to rid your body of unnecessary (sometimes even toxic) dirt and irritants. So, be sure to pack with you your hygiene kit and toiletries. The sun and salt water tend to dry out our skin too, so use a hydrating soap after going back to shore. Taking a bath doesn’t only bring back moisture to your skin but also removes all the excess sunscreen and other chemicals you applied on your body before swimming.

As for your hair, thoroughly wash it and deep-condition it for at least five to ten minutes. Also, don’t forget to re-apply some lip balm for your lips and hydrating lotion for your body.

Recommended hydrating lotion: Vaseline Intensive Care Lotion Deep Restore (PhP126)

Whether you’re spending just a day or two, or a whole week at the beach, being prepared is necessary. Did we miss any essential items that must go in a beach vacation checklist? Let us know in the comments section below.
