Expect sunny mornings with light and scattered rains this week in the City of Smiles. To decongest the city from a traffic dilemma, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) plans to build another flyover in the eastern part of Bacolod. In the field of tourism, a three-day conference about the meetings, incentive travel, conventions and exhibitions/events (MICE) industry was held with the aim of boosting tourism in the city. For more good news, Bacolod City’s welcome marker was inaugurated on Monday, November 26 in the boundary of the cities of Talisay and Bacolod, while the City Council has approved a resolution for strict hygiene and sanitation implementation in Bacolod City.

Read on to get updated on what’s happening in Bacolod this week.

Weather: Blend of sun and rain showers

Bacolod City will likely experience isolated thunderstorms and cloudy skies this first half of December. Expect fair skies and periods of sun for most of Monday, December 10 until Tuesday, December 11. However, things might change in the afternoon of Wednesday, December 12 as there will be light scattered showers moving in and bringing slightly cooler temperatures towards the weekend [1].

Traffic News: Possible construction of another flyover seen

Another possible flyover construction might take place at the eastern part of Bacolod City. To decongest the busy streets of the city, Congressman Greg Gasataya said that the DPWH Central Office has completed their feasibility study for the proposed flyover at Burgos extension towards city’s east portion [2].

In an interview, Rep. Gasataya said that the Office of the President already approved five flyover projects all over the Philippines, including one in Bacolod City. The said project is a grant from the national government and the funds are now available.

The construction timeline is yet to be finalized, since the DPWH will have to forward the result of the study first to the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) before providing a final copy to the office of Rep. Gasataya.

Travel Updates

Strengthening Bacolod City’s culture to boost tourism

As tourism is becoming one of the fastest growing industries worldwide, 500 travel operators, events organizers, and stakeholders in the tourism industry came together in a three-day MICECON Conference at the SMX Convention Center, Bacolod City.

The conference was full of edifying thoughts about tourism and travel in today’s era. Tourism Promotions Board (TPB) Chief Operating Officer Marie Venus Tan, the event’s featured speaker, mentioned that while other tourist destinations have the hardware to keep their tourism grow, the Philippines has the “heartware” to support and encourage tourist arrivals through the meetings, incentive travel, conventions and exhibitions/events (MICE) industry. She added that the Philippines should start focusing on its culture, which is its strength, in order to increase tourists’ arrivals.

She further stated that tourism is one of Bacolod City’s economic drivers apart from BPO-ICT. In addition, according to the Department of Tourism, Bacolod has the most number of foreign tourists in Western Visayas outside of Boracay [3].

Bacolod City’s welcome marker inaugurated

Last November 26, Bacolod City’s welcome marker was inaugurated to add more smiles to the people of Bacolod City [4].

This Las Vegas-inspired fixture is a project of Megaworld Corporation in partnership with the City of Bacolod. It is situated on the boundary of Talisay and Bacolod along Bacolod Silay Airport Access Road, at the 7.5-hectare Northill Town Center in Megaworld's Northill Gateway township.

The welcome marker features colorful masks which are symbolic of Bacolod's very own world-renowned MassKara Festival. It will greet both incoming and outgoing visitors of the city.

Passed Laws and Ordinance: It’s a yes for a strict hygiene and sanitation implementation in Bacolod City

To maintain hygiene and sanitation standards, Councilor Bartolome Orola authored a resolution to create a task force that will monitor strict hygiene and sanitation standards on toilets and washrooms of all food establishments within the city. The resolution was requested to Mayor Evelio Leonardia and was approved by the Bacolod City Council.[5]

This sanitation drive supports Bacolod City’s aim in promoting the city as a destination of national and international meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions and tourism (MICE).
