Manila, travel, things to do

Welcome 2019!

2019 starts this week, and a beautiful beginning is expected in Metro Manila. Besides the fantastic weather, there have been several adjustments and preparations that the government issued to give tourists and residents a safer and less stressful New Year celebration. For one, the MMDA lifted the number coding for commuters. There’s also good news for those planning to travel, as toll fees are also waived during the holidays! The operating hours would also be adjusted for the LRT-1. Meanwhile, room availability in hotels is also in good status for tourists going to Manila.

Weather: Generally sunny weather all over Metro Manila

Just like the weather during Christmas, the climate during the New Year would be mostly sunny. Clear skies are expected all over the metro—perfect for those who want to travel or engage in outdoor activities during the week. However, there would be a small chance of rain on some days, which is why bringing an umbrella is an essential. Day temperature is expected to fall between 27 to 32 °C [1].

Number coding lifted for New Year

The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) lifted the number coding rule for the holidays. The scheme will take effect from December 24 to January 2, 2019. However, there are some exceptions. Provincial buses that will ply Metro Manila will not be affected by the number coding. Meanwhile, Makati and Las Pinas have not yet announced whether they will lift the number coding scheme for the New Year [2].

Toll fees waived during the holidays

The toll fees in several of the country’s toll gates would be waived during the holidays. The following gates where this applies would be the NAIA Expressway, Skyway System, South Luzon Expressway (SLEX), and Star Tollway. Fees will be waived from 10:00 PM on December 31 to 6:00 AM on January 1, 2019 [3].

LRT-1 schedule for New Year released to the public

The Light Rail Transit Corporation (LRTC) announced the operating hours of the Light Rail Transit (LRT) during the New Year. Northbound and southbound trips will start at 4:30AM. The last trip from Roosevelt Station on December 31 will be on 7:00 PM while on January 1 and 2, the final trips will be at 9:45 PM. Meanwhile, last trips for Baclaran on December 29 and 30 would be at 9:30 PM. On December 31, the final trip would be at 7:00 PM while on January 1 and 2, the last trips would be at 9:30PM [4].

Travel updates: Hotel room availability

For anyone who wants to celebrate their New Year in the metro at the last minute, there are still plenty of available hotel rooms that you can book in Metro Manila [5].
