After the New Year festivities, Catholic Manilenos brace themselves for the Feast of the Black Nazarene next. The feast happens every January 9 and it is expected to draw over 2.5 million of devotees in Quiapo Manila [1], where the procession begins. In other news, the weather in Manila is expected to be generally sunny, which is great news for anyone who will participate in the Traslacion (the procession) or anyone travelling to Manila in general. Several traffic adjustments such as road closures and rerouting would also be made in accordance with the Feast of Black Nazarene.

For anyone planning to head to Manila, read on below to get the weather forecast, traffic situation, and travel updates for this week.

Weather: Better weather condition in Manila

After weeks of consistent rain, the weather forecast will be generally pleasantly sunny for the week—meaning those who will be participating in the Feast of Nazareno can expect sunshine and dry weather. The temperature will range from 29 to 31 °C during the day, while night time temperature will be between 22 to 23 °C. Devotees are advised to bring umbrellas as protection from the sun and in case it unexpectedly rains during the day [2].

Traffic News: Traffic expected in areas near the Traslacion route

The Manila Police District (MPD) and Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) have released the route for the Traslacion. It is expected to be from the Basilica Manor in Quiapo to Quirino Grandstand in Luneta. As such, motorists should expect heavier traffic on areas near the following [4]:

• P. Burgos Street
• Jones Bridge
• Dasmarinas Street
• Plaza Sta. Cruz
• Palanca Street
• Quezon Blvd
• Arlegui Street
• Fraternal Street
• Vergara Street
• Degue De Alba
• Castillejos Street
• Farnecio Street
• Nepomuceno Street
• Aguila Street
• Carcer Street
• Hidalgo
• Bilibid Viego
• Guzman Street

Motorists are advised to wait for MMDA’s announcement of road closures and suggested alternative routes.

Travel Updates

Gun ban and liquor ban to be implemented during the Traslacion

To ensure that the Traslacion will go smoothly this year, the Philippine National Police and Joint Task Force-National Capital Region have joined forces to implement strict measures such as adding extra units of policemen in crowded areas [5]. Devotees should also take note of what is prohibited to bring during the Traslacion, such as sharp objects and liquors. The MPD also might implement a gun ban and liquor ban in Manila during the festivities to make sure that devotees won’t be harmed [6].

Hotel Booking Status

For devotees planning to stay around Quiapo during or after the Traslacion festivities, there are available rooms in hotels nearby the area [7].
