For some people, February is a month to show their love for their significant others. However, this month, we should show love not only to our special others but to the arts as well, because aside from the ever-popular Valentine’s Day, National Arts Month is also celebrated in February.

Art is part of our culture. Artworks such as paintings, sculptures, theater plays, shows, and others are the reflection of our history and society. So this month is the time to better show our appreciation for artists and their works. How? By attending art performances, exhibits and theater shows in Metro Manila this February 2019, of course! If you’re ready to show some love to all the creatives in fine arts and theater arts, we listed down exhibits and theater shows in Metro Manila this February 2019 to make it easy for you. 1. Eto na! Musikal nAPO!

Returning this year is Eto Na! Musikal nAPO—a musical that features the songs of Apo Hiking Society and tells the story of how the legendary OPM group came to be. Set during the 70s, the play features seven friends who joined a college singing contest and it was set when they were in the process of writing a song that could make them win. During the course of writing, each member encounters personal hardships which shape the story. Among the 26 songs that you can expect at the show are the timeless hits “Ewan” (I Don’t Know), “Blue Jeans,” and “When I Met You.” Tickets are available at TicketWorld outlets and TicketWorld online.




How to get there: Take the MRT-3 and alight at the Ayala Station. Take the northbound exit and head to the BGC bus terminal. Ride a bus from the terminal and get down once you arrive at the Fort Strip Bus Stop. After you reach the stop, walk towards Maybank Performing Arts Theatre. It is in front of Maridien Condominiums.


2. Charot!

When: February to March 2019; 3:00PM and 8:00PM
Where: PETA Theater Center

PETA Theater Center is back with another social commentary play that pokes fun at the country’s current political state with Charot!. Charot! is the Filipino colloquial term for “just kidding.” The play tackles some of the modern issues facing the Filipino people in a comedic light. At the same time, it makes the viewers ask to what extent should jokes be used to face problems and when to actually take a stand. Along with the superb story, Charot! features a talented cast that consists of both theater newcomers and veterans. Tickets are available at TicketWorld outlets and TicketWorld online.

How to get there:* Ride the MRT-3 then alight at the Araneta Center Terminal Station. From there, walk from Farmer’s Plaza to Gateway Mall. From Gateway, head to Aurora Boulevard and ride a jeepney or UV Express to Espana or Quiapo. Ask the driver to drop you off at Caltex before the Quezon City Sports Club. Walk along the street at the right of Caltex then walk until you get to PETA Theater Center.

Jon Santos starts his 2019 comedy gigs with “Trumperte ATBP!” where he will impersonate several celebrities and politicians such as Donald Trump and Rodrigo Duterte. Trumperte ATBP is also a special show, as it commemorates Jon Santos’ 30 years in show business as a powerful impersonator and comedian. There would be additional performances from special guest comedians Eric Nicolas and Marissa Sanchez. Tickets are available at TicketWorld outlets and TicketWorld online.

How to get there: Take the MRT then alight at Taft Avenue Station. Exit the station at the northbound side and turn left. You will see a McDonald’s store. Enter the passageway near it. You will find a terminal of white Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal (NAIA) 3 loop shuttles. Ride one of the shuttles then get off at Resorts World Manila. Head to the Newport Mall and proceed to the third floor where the Newport Performing Arts Theater is located.

February is also the month for love, and what better story to tell during the season of love than William Shakespeare’s classic “Romeo and Juliet?” Ballet Manila’s take on the story of the star-crossed lovers will be executed through skillful, elegant, and precise ballet choreography that will keep your eyes on the stage. Meanwhile, the musical scoring of Prokofiev and production designs of National Artist Salvador Bernal will get you fully entranced with the show. How to get there: Ride the LRT-1 and alight at Vito Cruz Station. Exit the station and turn right to Pablo Ocampo Sr (Vito Cruz) and walk along Citiland Tower, University Mall, and Rizal Memorial Basketball Coliseum opposite Jollibee. Keep walking until you reach a terminal of orange jeepneys en route to CCP/PICC. Ride one then get off at CCP.


5. Guelan Varela-Luarca's Coriolano

When: February 22 to March 17, 2019; 3:00 PM and 8:00 PM
Where: Tanghalang Aurelio Tolentino, CCP Little Theater, Roxas Blvd., Manila

Besides Romeo and Juliet, another Shakespearean classic will be performed onstage this month. Coriolano is based on “Coriolanus,” a tragedy that is centered on the life of the Roman leader Caius Marcius Coriolanus. Coriolanus was a legendary general who decided to take part in politics, but due to his temper and dictatorial ways, he ended up causing his own downfall. As Coriolano is rarely staged, the play would be a treat for literature lovers who love Shakespeare’s works. Tickets are available at TicketWorld outlets and TicketWorld online.


How to get there: Follow the directions that were given previously.


6. Art Fair Philippines 2019

When: February 22, 2019 to February 24, 2019; 10:00 AM - 9:00 PM

Art Fair Philippines has been a yearly event for both artists and art appreciators in the country. Creativity abounds in this fair as both veterans and up-and-coming artists come together to showcase their best artworks. Works vary in media and range from modern to contemporary styles. The fair aims to present what Filipino artists have to offer and to make other people support art practitioners. Tickets are available at Art Fair’s website and on-site during the exhibit dates.




How to get there: You can take a bus from EDSA heading to Baclaran or Alabang then get off at Ayala Center. Another option would be taking the MRT southbound and getting off at Ayala Station.


7. Siksikan

When: February 12, 2019 to February 25, 2019; 6:00 PM
Where: SM Megamall Building A
Price: Free

Filipino street culture is the theme of “Siksikan” (Crowded), a five-man show that will feature the works of Jessie Mondares, Sam Penaso, Melvin Culaba, Geovanni Abing, and Chrisanto Aquino. Most of the works at the exhibit employ horror vacui—a technique in visual arts where all of the space in a canvas or surface is filled with details.

How to get there: Ride the MRT and get off at Ortigas Station. Exit the station and walk along the sidewalk until you reach SM Megamall. Galerie Anna is on the fourth floor of Building A.




Tips for a good time:

• For those who are planning to catch live shows, only purchase from official ticket distributors.
• Inquire if there are discounts for ticket prices for students, PWDs, or senior citizens.
• Practice common decency and make sure to follow the rules and regulations of the venue.
• Avoid being late and allot an extra hour for traffic when commuting so you can arrive early at the venue.
• If you’re bringing some gadgets such as cameras, tablets, or phones at the event, make sure to keep an eye on them at all times. Note that some events, especially theater shows, might not allow you to take photos.
• If there’s a dress code for the event, be sure to follow it.
