Buses are one of the most common modes of transportation in Metro Manila.
The month of June starts with a mix of updates regarding the weather, traffic, and travel situation in Metro Manila. In terms of weather, it will remain humid with chances of rain throughout the week. While for traffic news, the Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) stood by their decision to push for the provincial bus ban along the Epifanio De los Santos Avenue (EDSA) despite protests. In addition to this, the results for MMDA’s research and data for 2018 are now available, and they show the list of ‘killer roads’ in Metro Manila. To get the complete details, keep reading.
Weather: High chances of rain for the whole week
The official start of the rainy season hasn’t been announced, but the forecast for the weather this week will be consistently full of thunderstorms. The whole week is expected to be rainy and cloudy despite the temperature remaining humid at 33 °C to 34 °C [1].
To protect yourself against the sun’s UV rays and the rain, bring an umbrella. Since the temperature is still humid, wear clothing made from light fabric. Make sure to check the news for updates on the weather.
Despite many protests from commuters, MMDA stands by its decision to ban provincial buses along EDSA. MMDA traffic chief Bong Nebrija said in a hearing that the ban’s purpose is not to remove buses from EDSA, but to restrict 47 provincial bus terminals. These were seen as the cause of the congestion along the area. The bus terminals allegedly cause traffic due to the volume of passengers who get in and off bus stations [2].
MMDA releases list of ‘killer roads’ in Metro Manila
Data from the Metro Manila Reporting and Analysis System (MMRAS) listed the most dangerous roads in the area in 2018. The list is led by C5 with 27 deaths last year—an increase from the 23 deaths in 2017. C5 is followed by EDSA with 21 deaths, Roxas Boulevard with 17, McArthur Highway with 11, and Commonwealth Avenue with 10 [3].
Privately owned vehicles account for most of the reported accidents. Human error, such as drunk driving or losing control of vehicle, was seen as the main reason for most of the crashes. Motorists are advised to be more cautious when it comes to their driving to avoid fatal crashes and accidents on the road.
