The province of Ilocos has finally reopened once more last November 15 to kick-start tourism. Before getting to the tourist spots in Ilocos Sur, however, visitors must follow a few safety measures implemented by the Department of Tourism and the local government. These include a presentation of a negative RT-PCR test taken within 48 hours before travel and a mandatory taking of an antigen test upon arriving at the border.
Following all these safety requirements may be a bit of a hassle, but the charm and beauty of the reopened tourist spots in the province will surely be worth it. After all, Ilocos Sur is home to numerous heritage sites that fit any type of traveler; from solo wanderers to adventurous eaters, the province truly has it all. Immerse yourself in the country’s rich cultural heritage and history at one of the most popular spots in Ilocos, the famous Vigan Heritage Village. Strolling along the cobblestone pathways surrounded by Spanish colonial houses and buildings can make you feel like you’ve traveled back in time. During your visit, don’t miss the chance to try an old-school mode of transportation called “kalesa”, a two-wheeled horse-drawn carriage that can take you on a little tour around the heritage townscape.

Ilocos Sur thrives with beauty no matter what time of the day. The province does not run out of attractions that you can visit even after the sun goes down. One of these is the Plaza Salcedo Dancing Fountain. Every night at 7:00 P.M., the dancing fountain beams with life as the water and lights dance synchronously to lively background music. What’s more amazing is that the show is for free! There is also an area to the left of the fountain where you can play or capture stunning pictures.

One of the many rare jewels of Ilocos Sur is the majestic Pinsal Falls. Also known as The Twin Falls of the province, the cascading waterfalls has a height of 85 feet. One must trek to get to the falls, but there’s no need to worry about walking along a rough path for the trail has carved steps to make trekking easier. Its cold, crystal clear waters make it a perfect spot for swimming, diving, and just relaxing.

Another UNESCO World Heritage Site in Ilocos Sur is the Santa Maria Church. Considered as one of the most beautiful baroque churches in the province, it is also formally known as The Church of Our Lady of Assumption. Since it's nestled on top of a hill, you have to climb up a few flights of stairs to enjoy the mesmerizing view of the church’s clay brick and mortar architecture. One iconic feature about the church is its belfry, which has a unique structure and charm.

If you’re looking for a place to boost your adrenaline while enjoying the company of Mother Nature, then Caniaw Heritage and Forest Park is the place to go! The eco-tourism spot has lots of recreational activities for you to try, including ziplining, aerial walking, mountain tubing, camping, and biking. You can also enjoy sumptuous snacks and beverages at the Food Court while being surrounded by Ilocos Sur’s lush forests and mountains.
