In a bid to ease worsening traffic conditions, a counterflow ban will be implemented in Cebu City. Locals and tourists can take a trip to the south of Cebu, where there are many wonderful waterfalls waiting to be explored. They can stop by Carcar City to taste their bocarillo (candied young coconut) and lechon (roast suckling pig). Star apples, locally known as caimito, is also abundant in Cebu this February.

Motorists who will go against the flow of traffic will soon have their vehicles impounded. Last week, Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña signed an executive order which authorizes Cebu the City Transportation Office (CCTO) to impound the vehicles of apprehended drivers for 30 days. Drivers will also have to pay storage fees ranging from PhP100 to PhP500 per day, depending on vehicle type. The new policy was set in place to reduce the number of road crashes in the city. The Mandaue City Government is also looking into the implementing the same measure.

This February, one fruit in season that tourists and locals can enjoy is star apple. The fruit is called as such because of the star pattern that can be found in the pulp when it is cut in half.

Locally known as caimito, it has two local varieties: a purple-colored fruit known as tapul nga kaymito and a green one called puti nga kaymito. Caimito is rich in phosphorus, calcium, iron, and vitamin C, which makes it a great healthy snack to eat.

One of the main tourist draws of Cebu is its beaches. However, tourists who want to take a break from the beach can also visit many wonderful waterfalls in Cebu. The most famous waterfall in the province is Kawasan Falls in Badian, which is known for its canyoneering activities. Going further south, there’s Tumalog Falls in Oslob, Dao Falls in Samboan, and Inambakan Falls in Ginatilan, and Mantayupan Falls in Barili. On the other hand, those living closer to the north can visit Tinubdan Falls in Catmon.

For those with a sweet tooth, one pasalubong (take-home gift) they can buy from Carcar is bocarillo, a local version of bukayo (dried coconut candy). It is made of strips of young coconut meat which are shaped into a flower. Bocarillo comes in different colors such as yellow, green, and pink. It is sold by ambulant vendors inside buses and at the Carcar City Public Market. At the market, visitors can also have a taste of lechon with a twist. Carcar lechon (roast sucking pig) is flavored with a local herb called patiotes, making the dish unique to the place.

Fitness enthusiasts can join the Love Locks Cebu 2018: 5K for Love fun run. This pre-Valentine’s Day event will happen on Feb. 11 from 5:00 AM to 10:00 PM at the Cebu Business Park. Aside from the run, there will be other activities like a love locks ceremonial, card giving, dating games and booths, and a performance from an acoustic band. Entry fees are at PhP400 to PhP500. Registration is at Toby’s Sports at SM City Cebu and Runnr at Ayala Center Cebu.

There will be rain showers and thunderstorms in Cebu a week before Valentine’s Day. Periods of sunny and cloudy weather can be expected during the weekdays, coupled with showers and thunderstorms. The skies will be overcast by Friday, and this is projected to continue until Sunday, Feb. 11. Minimum temperature for the week is at 25 ºC, while maximum temperature is at 31 ºC.


Environmental rules for tourist spots

PENRO aims to prevent forest fires in Cebu.


The Cebu Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (PENRO) has asked managers of tourist spots to come up with environmental guidelines. The newly appointed officer-in-charge of PENRO also urged tourists to help protect the environment. This came after reports that a group of Cebuano hikers caused a fire in Mount Pulag, Benguet. Trekking and hiking activities had to be suspended due to the blaze. The PENRO will work together with the Provincial Tourism Office to make sure that similar incidents do not occur in Cebu province.
