The beginning of the year always signals a fresh start. Once again, the slate is wiped clean and for most of us this means that the possibilities are endless. Some choose to start a journey towards fitness or travel, but how about a journey towards pursuing the things you’re passionate about?

If you have no idea where to start, there are actually plenty of groups and companies in Manila that offer classes where people can pursue their passion. Read on as we list five areas of interest and places that offer classes for them. Who knows, you might just be switching careers before the year ends!

1. Makeup

For some, applying makeup is just a form of vanity. But for others who are keen in perfecting their brows or love a flawless red lip, putting on makeup is more than just looking good. If you have a passion for makeup, there are plenty of schools in Manila where you can learn more about it.

If you’re just curious about the basics, the brand Suesh hosts a Basic Makeup Workshop that touches on topics like skincare, makeup application, and creating a day time and night time look. The rate for the workshop starts at PhP1,000. If you’re aiming to become a pro, you can also apply for certificate courses in schools like Make-up Design Academy and Center for Aesthetics Studies.

2. DJ-ing

It’s no secret that we Filipinos have an intense passion for music. Lately, aside from ear-popping ballads, Filipinos are now also falling in love with electronic music. If you want to go beyond listening and dream of creating your own mix of music, there are actually schools in the country that teach DJ-ing and electronic music production.

One school in particular is Bounce Electronic Music and DJ School. They have a Beginners DJ course for those who are just starting out, as well as other advanced classes to take students further in their passion. If you already have the necessary gear, they also have the Bring Your Own Midi class to help you know your tools more.

Calligraphy has become huge in the recent years. Who knew that a simple form of lettering can become beautiful, expressive, and even therapeutic as well? If you’ve been itching to try your hand in calligraphy but scared that lettering isn’t really your gift, you can join workshops to get you started.

Calligraphy design firm Ink Scribbler has been hosting calligraphy workshops for years to help people express themselves through this art form. Their calligraphy workshops include tips on knowing the right tools and how to use them and using the proper techniques. They also entertain left-handed students and will provide all the tools needed for the class.

4. Photography

This year, depart from your smartphone and learn more about photography. (Image: Federation of Philippine Photographers Foundation’s Facebook Page)

In a time where almost everyone has a smartphone, it’s no surprise that many are into photography. From taking photos of themselves to their food, people are obsessed with capturing anything and everything and posting it online for the world to see. If you want to set yourself apart from the usual “Instagrammer” and be a pro in photography, it’s still possible.

Groups like the Federation of Philippine Photographers Foundation hold workshops for beginners in photography to hone their skills with the camera. Their basic photography workshop includes five sessions and each day ends with a practice shoot in Fort Santiago to apply your newly-learned skill. Their instructors also consist of industry experts who have been into professional photography for years.

5. Theater

Theater is not only for kids who don’t have anything to do during summer, and it’s definitely not only for people who want to become movie stars. Theater in itself is a form of art and self-expression, and if it’s one of your passions it’s not too late to join this creative world.

The Philippine Educational Theater Association (PETA), one of the top theater organizations in our country, not only produces musicals and theater plays but also teaches the craft to young and old artists alike. They offer workshops in Theater Arts, Basic Acting, and Creative Musical Theater. They don’t have any age limit and offer weekend classes for those who have a busy schedule.

No matter how young or old you are, it’s never too late to pursue your passion. Feed your creative soul and let us know on the comments section which of these classes you will be joining soon.
