The province of Palawan is preparing for COVID-19.

The entire province of Palawan is bracing for the impact of the novel coronavirus outbreak. To prepare for the possible increase in COVID-19 cases, Governor Jose Alvarez assigned hospitals and health facilities that will cater to PUIs, PUMs, and patients who test positive for COVID-19. The medical facilities are categorized into the needs of the patients and severity of cases.

Persons under investigation (PUI) who need hospitalization due to underlying health issues, seniors, and those who are already immunocompromised can be admitted to government-approved hospitals in the following areas:

• Aborlan
• Narra
• Rizal
• Brooke’s Point
• Bataraza
• Roxas
• Cuyo
• Coron

In case a PUI’s symptoms worsen, the patient will be referred to either Ospital ng Palawan (ONP), Culion Sanitarium and General Hospital (CSGH) in Calamianes Group Islands. ONP is also approved by the Department of Health (DOH) as Palawan’s centralized testing center for COVID-19. In case Puerto Princesa referral centers reach full capacity, patients will be transferred to Brooke’s Point’s Southern Palawan Provincial Hospital.

Meanwhile, PUIs who do not require hospitalization or those who are asymptomatic and non-elderly can be quarantined for a minimum of 14 days in the following facilities:

• Brooke’s Point Regional Evacuation Center (Southern Palawan)
• Coron Town Regional Evacuation Center (Calamianes Island Group)
• San Vicente’s newly constructed hospital (Northern Palawan)

Patients from municipalities who are treated in Puerto Princesa City will also undergo 14-day quarantine in a facility designed by the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction before returning to their respective towns. Meanwhile, patients living in the city will be required to undergo quarantine for 14 days in facilities made by City Health Office (CHO).

Patients confirmed with COVID-19 who also have severe symptoms and critical conditions or are high-risk PUIs will be confined in DOH-owned hospitals. Level 2 private hospitals are also designated to care for PUIs with severe symptoms and COVID-19 positive patients in isolation rooms. Patients who will need intensive care and are critically ill will be transferred to DOH-identified Level 3 hospitals in Manila.

With the number of PUIs, PUMs, and confirmed cases expected to increase in coming weeks, the Palawan local government reassures residents that they have health facilities ready.
