While positive cases of COVID-19 continue to surge and fall in the Philippines, many cities and provinces have opened their borders to domestic travelers. However, the country does not allow foreign travelers to enter the country to control the virus. Meanwhile, Filipinos abroad can still come home to visit their families and loved ones.

Despite these precautions for international travel, the Department of Tourism (DOT) believes domestic travel is the catalyst for economic recovery. That is why DOT has supported the reopening of tourist destinations around the country for travelers to visit. With this, DOT has released safety guidelines for tourists, accommodation establishments, tours, and restaurants.

After being cooped up for so long, you are probably eager to take a vacation. Whether it’s a day trip to the nearest attraction or a night’s stay at a beach resort, you’ll want to minimize the risk of catching or spreading the virus. Take a look at these quick and updated travel safety tips before and during your trip:

● When traveling in large groups, limit the number of people during your trip if possible.
● Check with the local government unit or the destination for requirements and paperwork before traveling. You should submit these requirements to avoid deportation.
● For accommodations, you should secure a reservation and practice contactless payment online.
● Before booking accommodations and tours, look into the establishment or service if DOT accredits it.
● While traveling, make sure you and your group practice social distancing and wear face masks in public areas such as lounges, vehicles, restaurants, etc.
● Along with travel documents, you should also secure digital passes such as the S-PaSS, QR codes, etc.
● And yes, don’t forget to carry your vaccination card as proof of your vaccination status.

With these tips, traveling amid the pandemic should not scare tourists and force the cancelation of trips to the country’s best tourist destinations. If you’re mindful and be more cautious than before, you can still travel while minimizing the risk of spreading the virus.
