After the eruption of Mt. Pinatubo, former US naval military base Subic Bay has successfully transformed itself into one of the major economic free port zones in the country. In the 90s, it was the go-to place for duty free shopping. In the decade that followed, it was converted into a nature and adventure destination. With the Subic-Clark-Tarlac expressway (SCTEX) bringing about fast and convenient travel going to Subic, it continues to become a northern destination of choice for both local and foreign tourists.

This year, we’ll get to see more developments in Subic not just in tourism, but also for business, logistics, and transportation. Get to know them as ShoppersGuide brings you a list of something to look forward to in Subic this 2018.

1. World-class Golf Course and a Retirement Community

A USD30-million investment in golf course and a 2,000-unit retirement community are both set to be completed this 2018 in Subic. The project started in 2016 with the renovation and re-development of the whole golf course, which includes the addition of a clubhouse, sprinkler systems, and ponds as well as golf carts and service vehicles. The second phase of the project is a community for the retirees and elderlies that will have complete amenities such as a gym, a sports center, arts and crafts studios, karaoke or music rooms, function rooms, library and bars and restaurants.

Part of the priority projects of the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA) in 2018 is the rehabilitation of piers and wharves in the Subic Bay Freeport Zone. These are the biggest assets of Subic Bay as they generate the biggest income in the free port area. The project’s goal is to put these assets in best condition to service more vessels as well as to accommodate bigger cruise ships in the future.

3. Subic-Clark Cargo Railway Project

Date of Completion: April 30, 2021

Transporting cargo from vessels docked in Subic to other areas in Central and Northern Luzon would become fast and easy in the coming years as the Subic-Clark Cargo Railway project commences this year. It will provide a railway connection between Subic Bay Freeport Zone and Clark Freeport and Special Economic Zone and other major economic hubs in the region. The project is targeted to be finished by 2021.

Triboa Majestic Bay Residences is a 167-unit luxury residence-resort that will soon rise at the Triboa Bay Area near the former APEC Villas in Subic. Construction has already started and is seen to be completed in three years’ time. It is a PhP2-billion project by a Taiwanese construction and engineering firm that will cater to class A and B markets, especially Asian expatriates and other foreign nationals. Aside from the condominium units, other amenities are also available, such as outdoor swimming pools, business center, shops, library, gym, restaurants and many more.

Subic’s overall growth is seen through last year’s statistics in revenue, employment, and investments, as well as through local and international recognition in tourism, finance, and management. Current developments in real estate and improvement of transportation and logistics through government and private partnerships also pave the way for growth. Not to mention, Subic shows a continued strength in tourism industry with the various events happening this year, such as Ironman 2018 and the Ad Summit PH 2018.

So, whether you’re a businessman looking for a strategic location to invest in or just someone looking for a place to relax over the weekend, Subic can be your option.
