Iloilo government officials are taking steps to address the prevalence of rabies in the province, which is increasing at an alarming rate. As of the third quarter of 2016, there have been 23 recorded cases already. This figure is four cases higher when compared to 2015 statistics. Thus, authorities are advocating for public awareness of rabies, accurate reporting of cases, and monitoring of rabies-free areas. Recently, Pan de Azucar and Botlog Islands in Concepcion, Iloilo have been declared as rabies-free zones.

On the other hand, Dr. Pacifico Lumauag, Rabies Focal Person of the Department of Agriculture-6, instructed pet owners to seek the help of their municipal and city veterinarians in vaccinating their pets.

WEATHER ADVISORY

There will be gloomy weather this week in Iloilo.

Cloudy skies thunderstorms can be expected during the first half of the week, while rain showers will pour either in the morning and afternoon the weekend. The average temperature for the week is 26°C, with a minimum temperature of 25°C and maximum temperature of 31°C.

TRAFFIC NEWS

Some major streets under construction and the rain can bring heavy traffic

A few of the major streets in Iloilo City are still under construction. Benigno Aquino Jr. Ave. in Mandurriao, Iloilo City and Luna St. in La Paz, Iloilo City are currently being overhauled and are just partially utilized by motorists and commuters. Tourists may opt for alternative routes such as Jereos St., La Paz and the service roads in Mandurriao district.

Tourists and first-time visitors in Iloilo must be cautioned that during rainy nights, it is hard for commuters to ride a cab or jeepney. This is because of heavy traffic congestion and the few drivers who roam around when it pours in the metro. Thus, tralevers might consider renting a vehicle to minimize delays in their schedule. Another option would be to go to their destination prior to the rush hour so that they don’t get stuck in traffic. Bringing an umbrella might also be helpful, whether rain or shine.

MAJOR AND MACRO ENTERTAINMENT

Freedom Cycle

Biking enthusiasts can join the Freedom Cycle this Saturday, October 22 at Atria Park, Narra Drive, Mandurriao, Iloilo City. Tourists and locals can participate in this free event. Free shirts and snacks will be given to the first 1,000 registrants. Tourists may look for shops within the vicinity that allow bike rentals should they decide to participate. The official ride for mobility and freedom will begin at 4:00 PM.
