The local government unit (LGU) of Malay, Aklan, has officially approved the implementation of the ‘motorcycle taxi’ or ‘motor taxi,’ which aims to provide alternative Boracay transportation modes for tourists and residents, with a minimum fare of PhP30.

According to the Malay LGU, motor taxis have allowed many to reach their destinations, as electronic tricycles (e-trikes), the main transport, cannot get to some areas.

Since motorcycle riders are discouraged from competing with e-trikes, motorcycle riders can be found in these places:

For Barangay Manocmanoc

Strategic areas for motorcycle taxi parking during daytime operations within Barangay Manocmanoc are the following:
• An area along the parallel road going to Lugutan Beach near Danilo Delos Santos's residence;
• An area located along the parallel road going to Gaisano Mall near Cagban Jetty Port;
• An area located near the residence of Marita Francisco in Tambisaan; and
• An area near Windy’s Place beside or near Talipapa Bukid.

All other areas within Barangay Manocmanoc, except on the main road, are allowed to park and wait for clients, provided it does not hamper the pedestrian lane and the owners of the buildings or structures are not affected and are not complaining.

The main road from AKY Gasoline Station to Balabag Mainroad crossing of Mt. Luho is not allowed for use or operation by all members of the association or cooperative from 6:30 AM to 8:00 PM. However, after 8:00 PM, the operation of the said members of the association is already permitted, provided they comply with the LGU's loading and unloading bay regulations.

For Barangay Balabag

Strategic areas for motorcycle taxi parking during daytime operations within Barangay Balabag are the following:
• An area located along the road near 24/7 parallel going to Bolabog Beach;
• An area located near Bloom Field beside Lake Town;
• An area located near Robinson Mall parallel to the road going to Sinagpa Beach; and
• All other areas within the Barangay except the main road are allowed to park and operate provided it will not hamper or disturb the pedestrian lane and the owners of the buildings or structures are not affected and complaining.

The main road from AKY Gasoline Station to Robinsons Mall is not allowed for use or operation by all members of the Association/ Cooperative, starting from 6:30 AM to 8:00 PM.

However, after 8:00 PM, the operation of the said association members is already permitted, provided they comply with the LGU's loading and unloading bay regulations.

For Barangay Yapak

Strategic areas for motorcycle taxi parking during daytime operations within Barangay Yapak are the following:
• The designated parking area for members residing in Barangay Yapak is opposite the City Mall; and
• All other areas within Barangay Yapak are allowed for parking and operation provided it will not hamper or disturb pedestrian lanes and owners of the buildings or structures are unaffected.

The main road from AKY Gasoline Station all the way to Robinson Mall is not allowed for use or operation by all members of the Association/ Cooperative from 6:30 AM to 8:00 PM. However, after 8:00 PM, operation of the said association members is already permitted, provided they comply with the LGU's loading and unloading bay regulations.

What are the mandates?

Under the said ordinance governing the implementation of motor taxis, it is mandated that the accredited members also be provided with accident insurance covering both the driver and the passenger. Wearing protective gear is also mandatory. The motorbike operators must follow their prescribed parking areas during the daytime. They are discouraged from using the main road daily from 6:30 AM to 8:00 PM.

The ordinance states that drunk drivers or passengers are not allowed to go anywhere in Boracay. However, only one passenger is allowed to go anywhere at a time.

Motorcycle drivers were limited to indigent residents to earn a livelihood. Children below eight years old are also discouraged from riding except during emergencies.

If you're planning to use this mode of Boracay transportation, these are a few essential things you should know. However, no matter what Boracay transport you choose, it is best to ask the driver for a transport matrix when going elsewhere in Boracay for a safer journey.
