With the shift from habagat (southwest monsoon) to amihan (northeast monsoon), rain showers and thunderstorms are expected to dominate Cebu weather for the week. The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAG-ASA) is expecting rainfall for November to be higher than normal. PAG-ASA Mactan Chief Al Quiblat said floods should be expected as more rainfall will cause creeks and rivers to overflow especially if drainage outlets are clogged.

Travel from Cebu to Iloilo made easier with ambitious bridge project

The plan to connect Cebu with Negros, Iloilo, and Guimaras through an ambitious bridge program will make it easier to travel between these four islands in the Visayas. The new bridge will become the longest one in the country, replacing the San Juanico Bridge connecting Samar and Leyte. Department of Public Works (DPWH) Secretary Mark Villar said the project is set to be implemented next year. He said work on the bridge system will be done round the clock to hasten its completion, but is still expected to result in some inconvenience to the public.

TOURIST SPOTS NEWS

Western embassies advise against traveling to southern Cebu

A recent travel advisory issued by the embassies of the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom prompted local authorities to increase security measures in southern Cebu. On November 3, the US Embassy issued a travel advisory for its citizens urging them to avoid southern Cebu. Areas particularly noted are the towns of Oslob, Santander, and Dalaguete where some terrorist groups are reported to be planning to conduct kidnappings. The British and Canadian embassies followed with their own travel advisories advising their citizens to remain vigilant at all times.

Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Central Command Chief Lt. General Raul del Rosario said security in the island will be reinforced following the travel advisory issued by the US embassy. He said they will coordinate with Navy and Army forces in northern Mindanao to prevent terrorist groups from entering Cebu. He added security measures will be implemented until the travel advisories are lifted.

Despite the travel warning, the Department of Tourism (DOT) 7 said local tourism appeared unaffected. While tour operators said some clients were thinking of canceling their tours, southern Cebu remains safe and secure. Southern Cebu is home to a number of tourist destinations frequented by foreign nationals.
