Ma’ Rosa movie plus other entertainment options for an extraordinary weekend

Sometimes, the drudgery of a routine can get even the best of us. So if you’re feeling stuck in a rut, take a well-deserved break this weekend.

Check out our list of movies, concerts, and other events this July 8 to 10 that are anything but ordinary. Come Monday next week, you just might get back that spring in your step.


Movies

Kids and the young at heart can watch the acorn antics anew of Scrat the squirrel in Ice Age: Collision Course. This is the fifth movie in the Ice Age series and is the sequel to Ice Age: Continental Drift from 2012. After Scrat lands in alien territory, he, Manny, Sid, Diego, and the rest of the herd go on another epic adventure to save the planet from a new kind of threat.

Meanwhile, those eager to see a film that hits closer to home would be glad to know that internationally acclaimed film Ma’ Rosa will be shown in local theaters this weekend. Lead actress Jaclyn Jose reaped the best actress award at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival for her performance, making her the first Filipina to be bestowed with the honor. Directed by Brillante Mendoza, the film tells the story of a sari-sari (neighborhood variety) store owner who becomes a drug dealer to make ends meet for her family.

If a trip down memory lane is right up your alley, there are concerts from international acts happening this weekend to help you do exactly that.

John Ford Coley of the American soft rock duo England Dan & John Ford Coley will perform this July 10, 8:00 PM at The Theatre at Solaire in Solaire Resort & Casino for the duo’s 40th Anniversary World Tour concert. Their 1976 hit “I’d Really Love to See You Tonight,” is one of the most popular songs by the Texan band. Tickets are available through TicketWorld and range from PhP856.80 to PhP4,819.50.

There’s also the Engelbert Humperdinck Live in Manila concert on July 10, 7:00 PM at the Smart Araneta Coliseum. English pop singer and balladeer Engelbert Humperdinck will take you back to the swingin’ 60s with his chart-topping songs like “Release Me” and “The Last Waltz.” Humperdinck’s career spans about 50 years in the music industry. His latest album, Engelbert Calling, was released in 2014.

Tickets range from PhP1,060 to PhP5,830 and are available through TicketNet.


Art Display

Exhibits from both veteran and budding artists make this weekend a good time to visit the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP).

Filipino visual artist Antonio Austria puts typical Filipino life front and center in his 6 Decades of A.G. Austria exhibit. His paintings from the 1950s to the present will be on display until July 10 at the Bulwagang Juan Luna (Main Gallery) and Pasilyo Guillermo Tolentino (Third Floor Hallway Gallery) at the CCP.

On the other hand, the Balangay exhibit features the work of visual arts students from the Philippine High School for the Arts in Los Baños, Laguna. The varied artworks are part of the students’ thesis project as they come of age in the art community. You can see their works until July 10 at the Bulwagang Carlos V. Francisco (Little Theater Lobby) at the CCP.


Clubs

Rainy days are the best time to have a cold beer in hand. Bars in Manila know this and so they are offering great deals for you and your beer buddies.

One such spot with overflowing alcohol is Relik Restaurant and Bar in Bonifacio Global City, Taguig City. From 5:00 - 10:00 PM every Saturday, Monday, and Tuesday, they sell unlimited draft beer for PhP248.

If you’re looking for something off the beaten path, Japanese whisky bar LIT Manila hosts happy hour from 6:00 - 8:00 PM on Mondays to Saturdays; and 4:00 - 7:00 PM on Sundays. During Highball Time, customers can get cocktails and beer at discounted rates. They have an all-you-can-drink promo for their Kakubin Highball, which is a popular drink in Japan made out of Kakubin whisky, soda water, lemon, and ice.
