'Pirates of the Caribbean' is Showing in Theaters this May Plus More!

The heat is on in Manila with lots of shows in the entertainment scene.

Metro Manila is getting busier this month of May as many students are getting a head start on their back-to-school preparations. Employees probably still have several days to enjoy basking in the sun at an out-of-town beach resort, with a few vacation leave credits left on their account. But staying out in the open air is not the only way to spend the summer! Those who can’t tolerate the outdoor heat can rekindle their love affair with their TV screens or visit the neighboring cinema houses to watch the latest shows opening this month.

Here, we’ve collated some shows and events you need to catch on your days off.


Concert

Popular Korean boy group BTS is coming back to the Philippines after their successful BTS Live Concert in 2016. 2017 BTS Live Trilogy Episode III: The Wings Tour in Manila promises two nights of live performances and get-together events with fans. The septet, comprised of Jin, Suga, J-Hope, Rap Monster, Jimin, V, and Jungkook first set foot on the archipelago for their BTS Live Trilogy Episode II: The Red Bullet, where concert tickets were reportedly sold out.

Tickets for the BTS Wings Tour can be purchased at SM Ticket outlets nationwide or via SM Tickets online.


What: Alden Richards Upsurge

Alden Richards, the other half of the sensational love team, Aldub, is having his very first solo concert entitled Alden Richards Upsurge. The first 300 people to purchase a VIP ticket to the concert can win a free one-day rehearsal pass, a signed Say It Again album and a group photo opportunity with Alden himself. Ticket prices start at PhP1,000 and are available via TicketNet Online.

Filipina Broadway royalty Lea Salonga is set to perform together with the Brigham Young University (BUY) Chamber Orchestra at the Cultural Center of the Philippines. The concert is a culmination of the BYU Chamber Orchestra’s series of performances in various parts of the Philippines. The crowd can expect a night of classical performances from Lea and the orchestra under the conduction of Professor Kory Katseanes, director of BYU School of Music.

In the drama movie Gifted, a single man named Frank Adler (Chris Evans) is raising his young niece Mary (Mckenna Grace), a child prodigy. Frank is planning a normal school life for Mary even as she shows advanced mathematical abilities. But Frank’s mother Evelyn intervenes and plots to separate Mary from his uncle.

Jerrold Tarog’s film is finally showing in cinemas after the Movie and television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB) reclassified it from rated X to R-18. Psychological thriller Bliss follows the story of Jane Ciego (Iza Calzado), an actress who’s in her 30s and tired of her usual routine since starting young in the industry. She decides to produce her own film but things don’t go the way she wants after she gets into an accident. Jane’s dream project will turn into a nightmare as she finds herself in a haunted house with her husband (Ian Veneracion) and a weird nurse named Lilibeth.

Bliss was screened at the Osaka Asian Film Festival 2017 and was applauded for its thought-provoking plot.


What: Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales/Salazar’s Revenge

Johnny Depp fans can see him reprise his role as Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales/Salazar’s Revenge. Captain Jack’s exhilarating adventure was interrupted when a group of deadly ghost sailors led by Captain Salazar (Javier Bardem) break away from the Devil’s Triangle, resolved to kill every pirate on the high seas. Captain Jack’s survival relies on the Trident of Poseidon, forcing him to falsify an alliance with Carina Smyth and Henry. Find out how Jack conquers his terrifying encounter with the most formidable and daunting enemy he has ever faced.

What: Mulawin vs. Ravena

More than a decade after the iconic fantaserye (fantasy series) Mulawin, GMA unveils its sequel titled, Mulawin vs. Ravena. Dennis Trillo, who came from the original cast of Mulawin, will still be part of the said sequel along with Carla Abellana, Lovi Poe, and Regine Velasquez. As of this writing, there is no specific airing date announced yet but according to reports, it will debut sometime in May 2017 and will replace another fantaserye, Encantadia.


What: My Love from the Star
When: May 2017

The Filipino adaptation of the famous Koreanovela My Love from the Star is also set to air this month. The original story revolves around Matteo Do (Gil Cuerva), an alien who has been living since he landed on Earth in the 16th century. Despite being cold and aloof, Matteo falls in love with his famous celebrity neighbor Steffi Cheon (Jennlyn Mercado).

The remake will be directed by award-winning director Joyce Bernal.
