Independence Day 2018 news

The Philippine flag

This week, we celebrate the 120th anniversary of Philippine Independence on the 12th, while Eid al-Fitr will occur on the 15th. For those who want to make travel plans for the whole week: good news! Both of the said dates are national holidays, meaning there would be no classes for students and no work for employees. However, bad news comes in the form of a consistently rainy and wet weather this week. Additional Independence Day 2018 news include possible heavy traffic due to rallies and celebrations and, on the bright side, free LRT and MRT rides.

Weather: Rains will get more frequent

Just like the previous week, this week will continue to be generally wet because of several thunderstorms. While the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical Astronomical Services Administation (PAG-ASA) is yet to declare the official start of the rainy season, Manileños can already expect a cooler weather brought about by instances of rainfall. The temperature will range from 31 °C to 33 °C, so bring a hoodie or a jacket and an umbrella [1].

Traffic News: Free LRT and MRT rides on Independence Day 2018, price hike on P2P bus

True to their annual tradition, the Metro Rail Transit (MRT) and Light Rail Transit (LRT) will offer free rides on Tuesday to commemorate the 120th anniversary of the Philippine independence [2]. The official time period when free rides will be offered is yet to be announced.

Motorists might also expect traffic on June 12 around Mendiola and Luneta Park as these are often the venues for rallies. To avoid these, travelers can adjust their travel time and leave earlier. If not, try to look for an alternative route [3].

In other news, Point-to-Point (P2P) bus service operator RRCG announced a fare hike as an effect of the rising fuel cost. As a result, the fare for the Alabang-Makati route is raised from PhP80 to PhP100 [4].

Travel Updates: Hotel booking status; Philippine Airlines’ first A321Neo Airbus

Hotel booking status

To those who are planning to go on a staycation during the two holidays, the general status of hotel bookings from June 12 to June 16 is still good. Both small and big hotels have available rooms for solo, double, and groups [5].

Philippine Airlines received first of 21 new airbus.

Philippine Airlines (PAL) has obtained its first A321neo aircraft in Germany as part of its fleet renewal program. The airline purchased a total of 21 A321neo aircraft, and the new airbuses will feature a two-class layout with 12 business class seats and 145 main cabin seats. These new planes are slated to fly routes in the Asia-Pacific region, including destinations like India and Australia [6].

Regular mall hours on holidays

Malls in Metro Manila will not adjust their schedules for Independence Day and Eid al-Fitr. However, they are expected to be crowded since students and workers do not have classes and work, respectively. When in malls, keep an eye on your valuables.

Luneta Park is also a popular venue during the Independence Day. The park is often the venue for Independence Day rites that the President attends. The area is expected to draw huge crowds during the holiday.
