Market Watch in Manila (October 9, 2018)

Yoorekka provides an updated list of prices of Mega Q Mart’s commodities and goods.

For this week’s market price watch, we headed to Mega Q Mart in Quezon City to check the prices of basic goods and commodities that typical Filipino consumers purchase. Below is a short guide contianing the prices of meats, eggs, fish, vegetables, fruits, and canned goods as of October 8, 2018.


Rice

The price range of rice in Mega Q Mart depends on the type. The most affordable one is NFA rice which starts at PhP27 per kilogram (kg).

Jasmine rice sells for PhP55/kg, while Dinorado and Sinandomeng each sells for PhP50/kg. Meanwhile, a kilo of premium rice and pandan rice can be bought for PhP48 each.


Sugar, Salt, Pepper

In terms of seasonings, brown sugar retails for PhP50/kg while white sugar can be bought for PhP56/kg. Table salt currently sells at PhP12 per 500 grams (g), while black pepper retails for PhP5 per 50g.


Fish, Meat, Poultry

A kilo of tilapia at Mega Q Mart starts at PhP110/kg while galunggong (round scad) can be purchased at PhP140/kg and milkfish at PhP180/kg.

The price of a whole chicken depends on the vendor, but it ranges from PhP155 to PhP160. Pork in adobo cut is at PhP210/kg, while beef starts at PhP250/kg. Cured ham sells for PhP180/kg.

White eggs sell for PhP5 per piece or PhP60 per dozen. While itlog na maalat (salted egg) is sold for PhP4 per piece or PhP48.


Vegetables

Red onions are priced at PhP100/kg, while garlic is at PhP80/kg. The price of other vegetables are as follows: tomatoes, PhP50/kg; siling labuyo (Cayenne pepper), PhP600/kg; potatoes, PhP70/kg; carrots, PhP130/kg; pechay Baguio, PhP80/kg; pechay Tagalog, PhP60/kg; kangkong (water spinach), PhP70/bundle; and cabbages PhP120/kg.


Fruits

Bananas cost PhP55/kg, while apples and oranges can be bought for PhP25 and PhP10 per piece, respectively.


Canned goods

The price of canned tuna is PhP15 for a 95g can while corned beef retails for PhP35 for a 150g can. A 155-gram can of sardines is at PhP16, while a 150-gram can of meatloaf is at PhP17. The prices for these canned goods may vary depending on the brand.


In terms of availability, consumers can expect that all the listed items are available in Mega Q Mart as of writing.
