Lanterns, a colorful ornament crafted with love and passion and one of the country’s epitome of the Christmas season, symbolize light and hope among Filipinos—this is what San Fernando, Pampanga is most known for. And every year, celebrating Christmas isn’t complete without its most prominent and brightest Giant Lantern Festival in Pampanga.

This year, San Fernando, Pampanga, the Christmas Capital of the Philippines, celebrates the 114th anniversary of the Giant Lantern Festival! Plus, after two years of waiting, the Giant Lantern Festival’s ‘Ligligang Parul’ (Lantern Competition) will make a grand comeback on December 17, 2022, at Robinsons Starmills.

Bonus! Winners of this Pampanga festival competition will be announced on the same night, while nightly exhibitions, which are open to the public, will run from December 18, 2022, to January 1, 2023. No tickets are needed.

The winning giant lanterns were made by Barangay Dolores - the grand winner; Barangay San Jose - 1st runner-up; and Barangay Del Pilar - 2nd runner-up during the Giant Lantern Festival 2017.

For the previous years, 2020 and 2021, the Ligligang Parul was put off due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, seven barangays and lantern makers: Telabastagan, San Juan, Bulaon, Sta. Lucia, Calulut, Sto. Niño and San Nicolas still made and exhibited their crafts to continue the festival's tradition.

In this year’s Giant Lantern Festival, more barangays and lantern makers are participating and might have a chance to win PhP300,000, PhP200,000, and PhP100,000—prizes for the top three best lanterns. The competition is tight as Barangay Dolores, the grand champion of the Giant Lantern Festival from years 2014 to 2017, is rejoining the competition.

Participating barangays and lantern makers are as follows:
● Florante Parilla for Barangay Bulaon;
● Teddy Aguilar for Barangay Calulut;
● Efren Tiodin for Barangay Del Pilar;
● Marcelino Ambrocio for Barangay Dolores;
● Rolando Ambrocio for Barangay Pandaras;
● Mark Niño Flores for Barangay San Juan;
● Edmar David for Barangay San Nicolas;
● Byron Bondoc for Barangay Sta.Lucia;
● Engelbert Bondoc for Barangay Sto.Niño; and,
● Arnel Flores for Barangay Telabastagan.
