Some cities and provinces in the Philippines, including Quezon City, Pasig City, Iloilo City, and Cavite province, are currently in a state of calamity due to the increasing cases of whooping cough, also known as pertussis.
Protecting yourself and your kids from this contagious illness is crucial if you plan a summer trip to these areas. Here are some reminders on
how to prevent pertussis during these times.
• Get vaccinated. Ensure you and your family are up-to-date with the Pentavalent Vaccine.
• Cover your coughs and sneezes. Always use a tissue or your elbow to cover your mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze.
• Seek medical help. If you or your family show symptoms, don't hesitate to see a doctor or visit the nearest health facility.
• Practice good hygiene. Wash your hands frequently, use alcohol or hand sanitizer, and wear a mask, especially in crowded places.
• Keep distance. Avoid close contact, especially with people showing signs of pertussis, especially infants and young children.
Pertussis, also known as whooping cough, is caused by Bordetella Pertussis. It can affect anyone, but it's hazardous for children and babies. This illness mainly targets the lungs and airways, leading to intense and prolonged bouts of coughing. Pertussis typically spreads through the air when someone infected coughs or sneezes. Common symptoms include a runny nose, cough, fever lasting up to two weeks, continuous coughing with a "whooping" sound, and vomiting due to severe coughing.
As of April 3, 2024, there are 49 cases of death due to the said disease.
These simple precautions can help protect yourself and others from spreading pertussis or whooping cough during your summer getaway or at any time during this season.
