Much like the world of fashion, the beauty industry also constantly tries to spice things up through new trends. The Philippines has seen waves of various makeup trends, including a Korean makeup fever, but this year, more trends are in store for makeup lovers. After the series of fashion shows during the latter part of 2017, beauty experts forecast which trends will be hits this 2018 based on the looks featured on the catwalk. Social media site Instagram also contributes to what may be popular among makeup junkies this year.

Some trends are classics making a comeback, while some are makeup looks that are gaining popularity. Seven of these cosmetic trends for 2018 are listed below.

1. Upside-down eyeliner

The cat’s eye and the winged eyeliner are two of the most popular go-to eyeliner looks by makeup artists and makeup addicts. But celebrities in Hollywood such as Mandy Moore and Shay Mitchell rocked the upside-down liner last 2017 and experts forecast that the trend would not die down anytime by 2018. Unlike the two previously mentioned eyeliner looks, the upside-down liner emphasizes the bottom lash line with an eyeliner in a preferred shade—usually with bright and colorful hues such as cobalt. The look is also not that difficult to achieve and it only takes just a few strokes to get the result.

Where to buy: Ever Bilena. Its Magic Eye Liner’s (PhP180) creamy-matte lead is long lasting and gives off a bold definition to the eyes.

2. Golden glow

Rihanna’s Fenty Beauty line already made waves online because of the wide range of skin tones for the foundation collection, but that’s not the only thing that the starting beauty line got known for. After Rihanna wore one of her highlighters in a pure-gold shade, many beauty bloggers, celebrities, and magazine editors soon jumped on the wagon. The yellow and bright shade is a fresh break from the typical celestial, rainbow, and iridescent highlighter shades that have trended from the past years.

3. Metallic makeup

The rise of the holographic trend last 2017 will pave the way for the return of metallic makeup. In fact, beauty companies such as Mac and Sigma are already coming up with clear lip glosses with a hint of holographic shimmer. The key to making the trend work is to choose one area to accentuate with metallic finish—for a much simpler look, try to use a metallic lip gloss on the lips but for a bolder look, a highly pigmented metallic eye shadow in a bright color will do the trick.

Where to buy: Kat Von D Beauty. The Metal Crush Eye shadow (PhP1,233) in Sephora Philippines comes in nine metallic shades: silver, gunmetal, cobalt, violet, mermaid green, citron green, gold, bronze, and copper.

4. Thick lashes

For a long time, women struggled to avoid making their mascara look clumpy, opting for full lashes instead. However, the clumpy trend is making a comeback since designer brand Dior featured the retro Twiggy-inspired look in its Spring 2018 show. In order to pull off this look, the makeup base should be fresh and natural looking.

Where to buy: Benefit CosmeticsRoller Lash (PhP1,500) comes in brown and black. The mascara wand of this item is custom-designed to make it easier to hook and curl lashes.

5. Bullet lipsticks

The last two years were dominated by liquid lipsticks—this makeup item was especially made popular by Kylie Jenner through her lip kits, prompting other brands to follow. However, Harper’s Bazaar predicted that by 2018, humble lipstick bullets will be taking over makeup stalls again. As evidence, Kylie Jenner’s own line of bullet lipsticks is already sold out on her website.

Where to buy: L’Oreal Paris. Its Infallible 10HR Longwear Lipstick (PhP500 at BeautyMNL) delivers matte finished high-definition colors that can last for 10 hours. The lipstick collection also comes in 20 shades, from nudes and reds to pinky hues.

6. Lip gloss

Lip gloss is not just a thing of the 90s and early 2000s anymore; beauty experts predict that the clear and shiny finish of lip glosses will overtake the matte finish trend this 2018. The difference between the new and old lip glosses is that some brands formulate their products to give a shiny finish without the usual stickiness.

Where to buy: Benefit Cosmetics. Its Punch Pop! (PhP1,100) also softens the lips and is available in seven bright lip colors.

7. One-shade eyeshadow

Pinterest is flooded with eyeshadow looks that not all can recreate as they are often complex and consist of many color combinations. Those with less makeup experience can sport this simple yet trendy look all the way from the Spring 2018 fashion shows as it only consists of one shade over the eyes.

Where to buy: Happy Skin. The Glam Squad Eyeshadow Duo by Mickey See (PhP719.20) contains two shades to choose from.
