Smoking is prohibited in covered public places in Bacolod City.

Expect nice weather with only a small chance of rain this week in Bacolod. For air travel news, nine Philippine airports, including Bacolod-Silay Airport, received star ratings from the Official Aviation Guide (OAG), an air travel intelligence company from the United Kingdom. Meanwhile, the Bacolod City Government urges the public to join the massive coastal clean-up drive to help preserve the environment. Lastly, the Anti-Smoking Ordinance will be strictly implemented in the city.

Weather Advisory: Mostly sunny days with few showers

Good spells of sunshine will bring your feet to more awesome places in Bacolod City. The clear skies will darken a little and a few drops might fall on Friday, February 15. But just don’t feel gloomy this weekend yet. There’s only a low chance of rain on Saturday, February 16, although everyone is advised to prepare for an afternoon rain on Sunday, February 17. Temperature this week will be on its highest at 32 °C and its lowest at 30°C [1].

Travel Update: 1-star rating for nine Philippine airports

The Official Aviation Guide (OAG), an air travel intelligence company based in the United Kingdom, awarded On-Time Performance (OTP) star ratings to nine Philippine airports, including the Bacolod-Silay Airport.

Airports that received a 1-star rating this year include Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA), Mactan-Cebu International Airport (MCIA), and the provincial airports in Iloilo, Bacolod, Cagayan de Oro City, Davao, Tacloban and Puerto Princesa [2]. Meanwhile, Clark International Airport received a higher 2-star rating.

CAAP spokesperson Eric Apolonio said that the recognized airports met the two criteria of OAG: a monthly minimum of 600 operations and an 80% rate in sending flight status information to OAG within a period of 12 months. The OTP rating does not base on whether the flights are on-time or not. A 5-star rating is the highest rating given by the OAG.

Clean-up drive for cleaner Bacolod coastal area

The resolution authored by Councilor Caesar Distrito for a massive cleanup drive in all coastal areas of the city was approved by the Bacolod City Council [3]. This clean-up drive will be spearheaded by the Office of the City Mayor with the support of all city government employees, students, 61 barangays, and private companies.

Hon. Distrito said that this drive aims to preserve the environment by doing sustainable activities such as coastal cleanups, and involving the participation of all stakeholders of the city. He stressed that Bacolod is among the most livable cities in the country, so it is important to rehabilitate and preserve the environment. He added that to sustain its effectiveness, this undertaking shall be made regularly by the city.

Passed Laws and Ordinance: Cooperate or you’ll get fined

Under the Anti-Smoking Ordinance, there are public places where smoking is prohibited [4]. Violators for the first offense will get a fine of PhP500; second offense violators will pay PhP1,000; third offense violators will be fined PhP2,500.

On the other hand, the City Anti-Smoking Task Force also monitors the compliance of business establishments. Under the ordinance, business establishments should put up their own designated smoking areas to avoid violations and penalties. Owners allowing their customers to smoke in a non-designated smoking area will also be fined.

Business owners will deal with the penalty of PhP3,000 for the first offense; PhP4,000 for the second offense; and PhP5,000 and possible closure for the third offense.

The City Anti-Smoking Task Force said that they need the cooperation of various sectors to keep the citizens informed of the ordinance. Currently, there are 15 task force personnel roaming in various areas every day.
