From musical plays to classical orchestra concerts, there are many shows you can choose from.
This August, the Philippines celebrates “Buwan ng Wika” (Month of Language)—a month-long celebration of the Filipino language. Buwan ng Wika is not just something only elementary and high school students can celebrate, you can, too, by supporting and watching Filipino theater shows and performances!
Some of the shows in the impressive line-up include a musical inspired by the Apo Hiking Society (Eto Na! Musikal nAPO), a historical play that tackles a friendship between two gays during the Japanese colonial era in the Philippines (Gee-gee at Waterina), and theater couples showcasing their versatility in performance arts (Triple Threats). Young and talented musicians would also take the center stage at the Serenata sa Ayala, Music at the Museum: Rush Hour, and Minsan Lang Kami Maging Musiko. 1. Eto na! Musikal nAPO!

It seems like in the past months, Filipino music has been taking over not just the concert stage but also the theater stage. With shows like Rak of Aegis, Sa Wakas (At Last), and Ang Huling El Bimbo (The Final El Bimbo), there’s no denying that the influence of original Filipino music still lives on and that nostalgia is a powerful thing.
Now, the nostalgia intensifies as Eto Na! Musikal nAPO! runs throughout the whole month of August. If the title did not give it away, this musical will feature the hit songs of Apo Hiking Society—a prominent Filipino band who gave us hits like “When I Met You,” “Panalangin” (Prayer), “Batang-Bata Ka Pa” (You’re Still Young), and “Ewan” (I Don’t Know). While the group has over 200 songs, the play will only feature 15 to 20 songs.
Aside from paying tribute to the formation of Apo Hiking Society, the play will also explore what Filipinos went through in the past 40 years, especially Martial Law. Some of the big names who are part of the cast include Jobim Javier (son of APO member Danny Javier) and GMA 7 artists Rita Daniela and Mark Bautista.

How to get to Maybank Performing Arts Theater: Ride the MRT and get off at the Ayala Station. Exit the station on its northbound side, and walk to the BGC bus terminal. Ride one of the BGC buses and get off at the Fort Strip bus stop. Walk to Maybank Performing Arts Theater, which is in front of Two Maridien condominiums.
2. Music at the Museum Rush Hour Concerts
When: August 9, 2018, 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM
Where: Ayala Museum, Makati City

The Manila Symphony Orchestra is currently on its 91st year.

Did you know that one of the oldest orchestras in Asia was founded in the Philippines? It is none other than the Manila Symphony Orchestra which was founded in 1926 by Alexander Lippay. Since its inception, the group has honed classical musicians and has produced some of the most remarkable virtuosos. While the group has achieved international recognition throughout the years, they still hold shows at the country every now and then. This August 9, they start their series of “Rush Hour” concert series at the Ayala Museum.

How to get to the Ayala Museum: Ride the MRT and get off at Ayala Station. Head inside SM Makati and walk towards Glorietta then to Landmark. From Landmark, cross the bridge. Ayala Museum can be found at the left side.
3. Minsan Lang Kami Maging Musiko: NAMCYA 45th Anniversary Concert
When: August 15, 2018; 8:00 PM

The National Music Competitions For Young Artists (NAMCYA) also conducts workshops all throughout the year.

The National Music Competitions for Young Artists or (NAMCYA) will have their 45th anniversary concert titled Minsan Lang Kami Maging Musiko (Only Once in a While Are We Musicians) on August 15. The National Music Competitions for Young Artists (NAMCYA) was developed in 1973 in hopes to discover new young artists in choral singing, indigenous instruments, family ensemble, piano, and chamber music.
Performers from the Manila Symphony Junior Orchestra, Kuwerdas Filipinas (Philippine Rondalla Ensemble), and NAMCYA winners will also grace the stage.

How to get to Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP): Take the MRT and alight at the Taft Avenue station. Ride a jeep heading to CCP or PICC.
4. Triple Threats: The Couples
When: August 16, 2018; 7:30PM

The Triple Threats series features three theater couples who individually are all “triple threats” on their own.

To kick off the “Triple Threats” series would be husband-and-wife tandem, theater artists Juliene and Stella Mendoza. For their 90-minute show, the Mendozas will showcase a storytelling-and-variety show-styled narration of how they met and came together as artists, friends, and as husband and wife. The show will be full of music from different generations.
Together, the two are phenomenal but they’re skilled and accomplished on their own. Stella was part of the 1990s Asian tour of the Miss Saigon, while Julienne is a recipient of the Gawad Buhay Award—which is viewed as the country’s version of Tony Awards.

5. Asian Youth Orchestra

The Asian Youth Orchestra (AYO) is considered as one the finest youth orchestras around the world.

The premiere Asian Youth Orchestra will perform in a two-day concert in Manila as part of its 2018 concert tour. The list of internationally-acclaimed artists who will be performing includes award-winning soloists such as Anna Tsybuleva on piano and Yu-Chien “Benny” Tseng on violin. They will be joined by conductors James Judd and Richard Pontzious, who founded the group in 1987. Some of the classical pieces to be performed include works written by Wagner, Rachmaninoff, Barber, Gershwin, Prokofiev, and Enescu.

6. Gee-gee at Waterina: Ang Musikal
When: August 18 to 19, August 25 to 26; 7:00 PM
Where: Arts Above, Artist Playground II, West Venue Building, 112 West Ave., Quezon City

Gee-gee and Anthony was also based on a one-act play during the Virgin Labfest in 2005.

After four theater seasons, the Artist Playground is set to produce Gee-gee at Waterina: Ang Musikal, its first original Pinoy musical. The all-new musical is based from the story, lyrics, and book by J. Dennis Teodosio, which was also the basis of a Cinemalaya film entry in 2006 starring Lou Veloso and Paolo Cabanero.
The story is set in the Japanese occupation in the Philippines during the 1940s. It revolves around the two titular titles: Gee-Gee, who is a town councilor and an aging drag queen, and Waterina, a “former comfort gay.” The two main characters embark on their stories as they reflect on some of the insecurities that the LGBTQ face such as the fear of being alone, lonely, and aging.

7. Serenata sa Ayala

The National Music Competitions for Young Artists (NAMCYA) not only conducts workshops but also a national annual contest for young musicians.

In addition to their 45th anniversary concert, the National Music Competitions for Young Artists (NAMCYA) will also hold a separate show for the winners of the competition. The winners will perform classics, Filipino symphonic band music, and contemporary music. Accompanying the young musicians are Franz Ramirez as conductor, John Raymond Sarreal on flute, the Cardona Ocho band, and Gabriel Allan Paguirigan on piano.

8. Balag at Angud, A Musical
When: August 31, 2018; 8:00 PM

Balag at Ngud are also the names of Yee’s art works and exhibit respectively.

Tanghalang Pinoy will open its 32nd season with “Balag at Angud”, an original and dramatized stage adaptation of the struggles and hardships of Luis Yee Jr.—a Filipino artist deemed a “revolutionary” by many because of his contributions to the art scene. Known to have helped pave the way for installation art in Southeast Asia, he is a very versatile artist knowledgeable in different media such as sculpting, painting on acrylic or wood, architecture, and many others.
Palanca Award-winner Layeta Bucoy wrote the story while the play’s original musical arrangement was made by Dodjie Fernandez.

Tips for ticket purchasing and watching:
- Be sure to follow the social media pages of the theater company, artists, venue, or organizers to be updated on last-minute changes regarding the show.
- Only buy from official ticket distributors for a secure transaction.
- For students, PWDs, or senior citizens, check if the event offers special discounts.
- As common courtesy, make sure to observe the rules and regulations of the venue. Take note of what’s allowed and prohibited.
- Before bringing children with you, make sure that the venue or event allows children. And if you’re bringing a kid, make sure to keep an eye on them.
- As traffic can get unpredictable at times, adjust your travel time and leave an extra hour.
- Arriving early at the venue can land you better parking space.
- If you’re carrying valuables such as gadgets and money, keep an eye on them always to avoid theft.
