If the theater shows in September made you hungry for more, then sate your hunger this October. This month, we have a big serving of shows that range from fairy tale adventures to political satire. If you want escape the reality with fantasy, magic, and adventure, shows like Le Corsaire and Rapunzel! Rapunzel! A Very Hairy Fairy Tale should be in your watch list. On the other hand, if you want to keep in touch with reality and current issues, you must consider getting tickets to A Game of Trolls and Trumpterte. For the old souls who prefer to mellow down with the classics, the Duo Piano concerto and All Out of Love would be a treat to watch.

In the past months, we have sung along to the songs of Eraserheads, Sugarfree, Aegis, and Apo Hiking Society through musicals that featured their hits. This month, the legendary group Air Supply will be honored through All Out Of Love: The Musical.

The musical takes place one evening when Tommy King, a music mogul, tries to convince striving musician Jamie Crimson to help him save his record company. To do so, he plans on having Crimson go on a world tour to promote his latest album. But the two men have their personal struggles: Jamie finds it difficult to leave his song writing partner and love interest, Rayne, while Tommy is dealing with his strained relationship with his daughter and the loss of his wife. The play stars theatre actors Rachel Alejandro, Tanya Manalang, Mig Ayesa, Jamie Wilson, and Raymund Concepcion.

How to get to the Newport Performing Arts Theater: Ride the MRT and get off at the Taft Avenue Station. From the station, head down along the northbound side and turn left. Look for McDonald’s and enter the passageway near the chain, where you will find white Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal (NAIA) 3 loop shuttles. Ride it, get off at Resorts World Manila, and proceed to the third floor of Newport Mall. The Newport Performing Arts Theater is located there.


2. A Game of Trolls

A Game of Trolls tackles one of the problems with the country’s current political state: fake news.

In the age of internet and social media, the youth is becoming more aware of the social issues that surround the country. Drawing on this reality, A Game of Trolls encourages the youth to be more proactive with their own research and to look beyond the memes and propaganda on the web, particularly those that are related to politics.

The musical revolves around Heck, a paid troll and keyboard warrior working for an online pro-martial law campaign. Because of his indifference to any belief, it’s easier for him to lash out on those who oppose martial law. But as he encounters the stories of survivors, he begins to question his own beliefs, in turn affecting his relationship with his mother, who used to be an activist during the martial law period.

How to get to the PETA Theater: Take the MRT to Araneta Center Terminal Station. Exit the station and walk from Farmer’s Plaza to Gateway. From Gateway, walk to Aurora Boulevard and ride a jeepney or UV express heading to España or Quiapo. Ask the driver to drop you off at Caltex, right before the Quezon City Sports Club. Enter the street at the right of Caltex and walk 290 meters to get to the PETA Theater Center.


3. Le Corsaire (The Pirate)

The Le Corsaire is part of a series of shows that Ballet Manila will present for their 23rd performance season.

This October, Ballet Manila will bring back the swashbuckling tale of Le Corsaire (The Pirate) to the stage. Presented through well-choreographed action-packed sequences is a classic story of love and betrayal. Le Corsaire focuses on the journey of a pirate who traverses rough seas for the love of his life.

The story will not be the only thing that will mesmerize you. The talented and skilled dancers of Ballet Manila will also show off their incredible energy as they would be using the Vaganova technique, a Russian ballet style that requires precise, controlled strength.

How to get to the Aliw Theater: Take the LRT-1 and drop off at the Vito Cruz station. From the station, turn right to Citiland Tower, University Mall, and Rizal Memorial Basketball Coliseum. From there, keep walking until you see orange jeepneys heading to CCP or PICC. Ride one and ask the driver to drop you off at the Aliw Theatre.




4. Rapunzel! Rapunzel! A Very Hairy Fairy Tale

What makes Rapunzel! Rapunzel! A Very Hairy Fairy Tale a must-see show? It will make the inner kid in you excited about fairytales again! The musical is a re-telling of the classic story of Princess Rapunzel—a fair maiden who is blessed with very long hair. In a scheme to rule over the kingdom, the evil Lady Zaza trapped Rapunzel in a tower deep inside a forest. It will be up to Sir Roderick and his hair stylist friend Edgar to rescue the princess.

How to get to Onstage Theater: Ride the MRT to the Ayala Station. Once you arrive at the station, walk inside SM Makati. The mall is interconnected to Greenbelt, so walk along until you get to it. The theatre is in the second floor of Greenbelt.

Duo Piano Concerto brings together two exceptional concert pianists for a good cause.

If you want to have a good time and help a good cause at the same time, the Duo Piano Concerto might interest you. Ticket proceeds of the event will benefit the Museo Pambata Foundation Inc., an organization which aims to strengthen the knowledge of Filipino children about their cultural identities and values.

In addition to helping children, you can get to enjoy magnificent music from international concert pianist Natascha Majek. Joining her would be Raul Sunico, a renowned pianist who was also the former Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) president. The two would be performing classics such as Schumann Andante and Variations and Mozart Sonata in D for two pianos.

How to get to the Globe Auditorium: Ride the MRT-3 and get off at Ayala Station. Take the northbound exit and look for the BGC bus terminal. Ride one of the buses and alight at the Fort Strip Bus Stop. From the stop, walk to Maybank Performing Arts Theatre, which is in front of Maridien Condominiums.


6. Dance Until You Shatter Yourself

Dance Until You Shatter Yourself is part of the 1SA solor arts platform series of shows.

Dancers are artists who use their bodies as the canvas: each movement is a stroke that builds up to transform into a masterpiece. This is one of the visions that Dance Until You Shatter Yourself aspires to show to its audience.

With the accompaniment of music, video, light, and narration, the dancers will showcase not only their grace but also their endurance. They envision the point of exhaustion as a rebirth even as they will try to continue dancing. The show invites its viewers to witness the dancers ‘hold infinity in the palm of their hands, and eternity in an hour.’

How to get to Power Mac Center Spotlight: Ride the MRT to Guadalupe station. From the station, ride a jeepney en route to Del Pan or El Guinto and get off at PRC. Circuit Makati is walking distance from there. Once there, find the yellow building; the Power Mac Center Spotlight is on its second floor.


7. Jon Santos as TRUMPERTE

Jon Santos is indeed a man of many faces: he is an actor, writer, and a comedian.

If there’s one thing that Jon Santos is known for, it’s that he is a phenomenal impersonator. Over the years, Jon has impersonated controversial politicians and celebrities through his satirical shows. Besides the on-point costumes and prosthetics, Jon is known for his backhanded jokes and amusing nudge at the relevant social issues happening in the society.

Trumperte would be an extra special show for him as it will mark his 30 years in the entertainment industry. As the show’s name suggests, Jon will do hilarious impressions of US president Donald Trump and Rodrigo Duterte.

8. Ang Pinakamakisig Sa Mga Nalunod Sa Buong Daigdig

The Ang Pinakamakisig sa Mga Nalunod sa Buong Daigdig will close the 84th theatre season of the FEU theater guild.

After the success of last year’s stage adaptation of “Ang Pinakamakisig sa Mga Nalunod sa Buong Daigdig” (The Handsomest Drowned Man in The World) the Far Eastern University Theater Guild will bring back the original cast along with new members in a revival. The story features a small town whose residents’ lives changed upon the discovery of a tall, handsome, and strong man. The musical production is based on Teresa Lorena Jopson’s adaptation of Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s “The Handsomest Drowned Man in The World.”

How to get to PCC Center Studio: Ride the LRT-2 and get off at the Recto Station. Exit the station and ride a jeepney heading to Morayta-Gatsambide. Ask the driver to drop you off at the gates of FEU Tech. The PCC Studio Center is on the ground floor.


Tips for ticket purchasing and watching:

  • For safer transactions, only purchase from official ticket distributors.
  • If you’re a student, PWD, or senior citizen, check if you can avail ticket discounts.
  • Observe the rules and regulations of the venue.
  • If you plan on bringing children, check with the event if kids are allowed. If they are, keep an eye on them during the event. Make sure that they are on their best behavior to avoid pestering fellow audience members.
  • Always keep an eye on your personal belongings and keep them close at all times.
