As January ends, Metro Manila begins battling the COVID-19 surge caused by the cold season. Because of the alarming cases of COVID-19, local government units are speeding up vaccination of booster shots in various vaccination sites. In addition, health protocols are amped to lessen the spread of the more contagious Omicron variant of COVID-19.

Transportation News: DOLE: Essential workers exempted from the “no vaccination, no ride” policy

The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) clarified last January 18 that workers with proper ID are exempted from the “no vaccination, no ride” policy imposed by the Department of Transportation (DOTR) earlier this January. The policy gathered criticisms since difficulty in vaccination access may lead to deprivation of essential services.

According to DOLE Secretary Silvestre Bello III, unvaccinated employees can present their valid work IDs when using public transportation. However, this policy exempts those whose work industry is not counted as ‘essential work’ based on the classifications set by the national task force [1].

Travel Updates: “No vax no fly” implemented in domestic flights; 48-hour test needed for new PH arrivals

Fully vaccination is required for air travel under the “no vaccination, no fly” protocol set by the DOTr. This effect will be applicable for Metro Manila under Alert Level 3 [2]. In addition, valid vaccination cards will be required before boarding the airplane for health protocols.

The “no vax, no fly” protocol is not applicable for those with medical necessities and emergencies. Exemptions also include individuals who could not get vaccination due to pre-existing conditions. Instead, they must present valid medical certificates with a physician's number. Other requirements include a negative RT-PCR test taken at least 48 hours before entry at the airport. Unvaccinated children will not be accepted unless for urgent medical emergencies.

As for foreign travels, updated health protocols include mandatory COVID-19 swab tests taken 48 hours before their flight to the Philippines. Previously, it was required to be 72 hours.

Health News: Selected pharmacies will start booster vaccine rollout in Metro Manila.

Aside from vaccination sites, selected pharmacies in Metro Manila are now being considered for vaccine rollout of booster shots. The booster vaccine rollout in pharmacies started last January 21. The following pharmacies will serve as vaccination sites:

● Healthway in Manila City
● Mercury Drug Malate in Pres. Quirino Avenue
● South Star in SSD Marikina
● Watsons in SM Supercenter Pasig
● Generika Drugstore Signal 1 in Taguig City
● The Generics Pharmacy, Parañaque City
● Qualimed Clinic in McKinley Road in Makati

In addition, malls are also being considered as vaccination sites for booster shots.

COVID-19 home care kits provided to positive residents in Parañaque City

COVID-19 positive residents in Parañaque City have received home care kits courtesy of the city LGU. The home care kit includes vitamins, medicines, bar soap, face mask, alcohol, thermometer, disinfectants, and pulse oximeter.

As of January 19, Parañaque City has 1,551 confirmed cases of COVID-19.
