Fight the virus even while at home!

The novel coronavirus or COVID-19 has now become a global pandemic that continues to affect the world. With every passing day, rules such as lockdowns, community quarantines , mall closures, and the like are being strictly implemented to fight off the virus. Most of these rules require people to stay at home.

If you think you can’t do your part in slowing down the transmission of the novel coronavirus while at home, think again. There are actually lots of things that you can do to lower the risk of infecting yourself and your loved ones. You probably know most of them by now, but it pays to make sure that you know all that you need. Read on to find out what preventive measures to take in order to stay safe during this pandemic.

1. Practice social distancing and avoid large crowds.

Maintain space around you.

COVID-19, like the flu, can be transmitted by coming in close contact with an infected person. The thing is, not all people show symptoms so it can be a challenge to find out who’s infected or not. To avoid the risk of catching the virus, strictly practice social distancing by maintaining a distance of 1 meter from others. Should you find yourself surrounded by people (like when inside an elevator or in line at a queue), be sure to wear a face mask and keep your distance. Be wary of touching elevator buttons and light switches as well. Upon arriving home, immediately wash your hands with soap and water for 20 seconds or sanitize them using an alcohol solution before coming in contact with anyone [1].

2. Have good air ventilation.

Having clean air at home means reducing the risk of getting sick.

As new evidence shows that the COVID-19 virus can remain airborne and be transmitted in that manner [2], it is important to check the air flow in your unit. Improve air ventilation by opening windows. The air inside your living space must be able to flow in and out properly so stale and infected air can get out easily. Always keep your windows and doors clean, and your curtains disinfected using a disinfectant spray. You can also use an air purifier with a HEPA filter to give you another layer of protection.

3. Disinfect all high touch surfaces.

Disinfect to protect!

The coronavirus is the type of virus that can survive outside a human host. Not only can it persist on air, but it can also linger on items and surfaces. This means the virus can be transmitted to you if you touch something that an infected person has touched. Therefore, surfaces that are always being touched— including your furniture, countertops, light switches, and especially your phones—are highly susceptible to the virus. With this, remember to always disinfect these high-touch surfaces. Make use of cleaning solutions and disinfectant sprays. After disinfecting your things, clean your hands once more before touching them again.

4. Practice everyday preventive actions.

Proper sanitation and disinfection must also be done at home.

At a time like this, staying at home is a strict rule that must be followed. But just because you’re inside doesn’t mean you aren’t susceptible. Even while at home, practice following preventive actions every day. These actions include regular washing of hands with soap and water for 20 seconds; avoiding touching your eyes, nose, and mouth as these can be entry points for the virus; and covering your nose and mouth while sneezing or coughing. If possible, do not touch your face completely. A daily intake of vitamins is also important because having a strong immune system can help your body fight against COVID-19.

5. Stay at home and always keep an eye on news and updates.

Remember, knowledge is power!

Whether or not you feel sick, it’s best to stay at home especially if there is no circumstance that will require you leave your unit. Staying at home can greatly reduce the risk of getting infected, plus it can also help you keep a close eye on your loved ones. While at home, be sure to keep yourself updated and aware about the situation. Watch the news daily and read articles from reputable sources. Be careful; do not immediately believe everything you watch or read. Only gather information from trusted and reliable sources to avoid misinformation.
