Holy Week is a significant period of spiritual devotion for the locals that has started solemnly in the Philippines from March 24 until March 31, including San Fernando, Pampanga.
San Fernando, Pampanga, is currently observing Holy Week and gearing up for the much-awaited re-enactment of Christ’s crucifixion for their
“Maleldo” Holy Week 2024 event, which is held yearly. This Holy Week 2024 event in Pampanga attracts pilgrims and tourists who wish to see the Way of the Cross and experience the region's religious traditions.
Maleldo is a word in the Kapampangan language that refers to the sacred week of Holy Week. The Maleldo event is a highly anticipated
Holy Week event in the city, where the passion of Christ is re-enacted. The re-enactment is a solemn and moving event that serves as a memorial of the sacrifices made by Jesus Christ and is a testament to the unwavering faith of the people who participate in it.
This year, the re-enactment will be joined by penitents carrying heavy wooden crosses for nearly two kilometers before they are nailed to it, where at least seven penitents will be crucified in three different barangays: Sta. Lucia, San Juan, and San Pedro Cutud. The crucifixion will be held on Good Friday, March 29.
Expect some penitents to walk barefoot to the crucifixion spot with improvised crowns or thorns on their head, whipping themselves until they bleed in a quiet procession.
