Adding personality to a home is easy when you have a big budget. But what if you are with little to no money at the moment? It doesn’t mean you can’t make your home more “you” anymore. We have listed five budget-friendly living room decorating ideas that will surely give your home the boost it needs. These involve knickknacks that you can easily find or make, and upcycle into beautiful ornaments.
1. Go Natural.
Give your living room a tropical twist by hanging seashell wind chimes by the window or door. Simply drill holes in each shell that you found during your beach trip and tie them together using a plastic thread. If you’re aiming for a more rustic feel, incorporate some rattan or bamboo decors. All you need is a big vase that can hold five or ten poles. You can place it beside the TV, shelves, or any spot in your living room that will benefit from an accent or two.
2. Create a gallery wall.
Pictures, including family portraits, can enhance the ambience of any room when done correctly. You just have to look for great-looking frames and print the photos in the right sizes. Before doing that, decide on a theme to make them look cohesive. Do you want a more minimalist approach? If so, look for pictures that are simple with one to three colors in them. How about a vintage theme? You can finally use all those sepia-tone photos in your family album. There are many discount stores that offer affordable picture frames in various sizes. Some of them are even offered in sets.
3. Display your own artwork.
Aside from photos, you can also hang your own artwork or your child’s to give your home a warmer feel. You do not have to be Pablo Picasso to create a work of art. Sometimes it’s the playful, whimsical, or weirdly fascinating ones that inspire a good conversation. You can either hang them on your living room wall, or prop them on small easels, which cost around Php 150 to 300 each, for an artistic touch.
4. Add plants.
Studies show that having plants inside your home can be extremely beneficial for your health—physically, emotionally, and psychologically. They do not only purify the air you breathe, but they also freshen up your home, making you feel more calm and relaxed. However, you have to be careful in choosing which plant to use as some of them can cause allergic reactions. Two of the most popular indoor plants in the Philippines are water plants, commonly known as lucky bamboo, and ferns .These can be bought for less than Php100 and can be easily found in any local garden center.
5. Create ambience with DIY candles.
Transform your living room into a relaxing sanctuary by adorning it with candles. You don’t even have to buy them because you can make them yourself. All you need are wax or lard old glass, or wood containers, wicks or cotton strings, and broken crayons that you have stashed in your craft box. Just heat the wax or lard in a pan until the clumps are gone, then add the crayons. Once they are all melted, pour them into your containers and add the wicks. These materials can be found inside the home so you get to save more money. However, if you want to add scents, there are many affordable essential oils available in grocery stores.
Doing a home makeover need not be expensive. With a little creativity and some research, you can easily create a living space that truly reflects your style.
