For a decade,
fire dancing in Boracay has been one of the tourist attractions on this resort island, as it not only mesmerizes but also entertains the tourists.
However, witnessing a fire dance can be challenging for those new to this resort island and mostly DIY (do it yourself) tourists, as the local government has prohibited fire dancing at the white beach since 2018.
A fire dance is a captivating spectacle that combines two essential elements: the fire and the dancers themselves! Fire dancers, also known as poi spinners, often perform a choreographed routine in a solo act, duo, or group performance. They skillfully manipulate specialized strings or a large ring to juggle fire, creating a mesmerizing display of light and movement, often accompanied by rhythmic music.
As a trivial fact, movie actress and former sexy star Rachel Lobangco was considered the fire queen in Boracay. Lobangco’s last performance was on March 18, 2024, during the Philippine Kiteboarding Tour Awards Night at Aqua Hotel-Boracay. The Etniko Boracay Fire Dancers and the Island Rhythm Force Band accompanied her.
Fire dance is a versatile art form practiced between 6:00 PM and 11:00 PM in various establishments in Boracay, such as bars and hotels. In addition to their public performances, Boracay fire dancers can bring their unique spectacle to corporate events, weddings, and anniversaries, adding a touch of excitement to any occasion on the island.
According to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, fire dancers use kerosene, which harms the white beach. Thus, they initially urged the use of LED poi as an alternative.
Yet, many tourists prefer to watch an actual fire dance because of their excitement, mostly wondering if anybody will catch fire. Although tourists are allowed to try, it is not safe for everyone, especially children, because of the risks of being hurt in the process.
Most Boracay fire dancers will offer you a photograph and video opportunity (for reels) if you provide a tip or donation of PhP50 and above. For generous tourists, other fire dancers will make extra effort to ensure you’ll have quality photos as a souvenir. The photography session usually takes place after each performance. For safety, you should not approach them while they are performing, or you may encounter injuries caused by the live-fire dance performances. Each performer has their respective aides to assist and ensure everything is handled. Kids can only participate in the photograph session if their parents or guardians accompany them.
