For years, the
habagat season in Boracay was considered a low season. This prompted hotels and restaurants to offer discounts to lure tourists to Boracay, a tradition still being carried out by the hotels this year.
Some resorts offer ten percent to as much as 40 percent discounts and promotional bundle packages, among other things. With the current inflation, this is also an excellent way to save money for the school openings in August.
For context, some resorts this year reported having fully booked accommodation. According to the Malay Tourism Office, COVID-19 prompted schools to transfer the school year dates, making June-August a ‘summer vacation.’ In fact, from June 1 to 15 this year, Boracay registered a whopping 108,857 foreign and local tourists. Of the said number, 96,832 were domestic tourists, 11,289 were foreign travelers, and 735 were Overseas Filipino Workers.
This means that 7,257 tourists come to Boracay daily during the habagat season. Given these numbers, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources recently approved the appeal of the local government of Malay to raise the tourism capacity to 8,500 tourists per day compared to last year, when it was only limited to 6,500 daily.
