The stunning architecture is an 18th-century landmark established by the Jesuit missionaries when they arrived in 1565. This structure burned down in 1798 after King Carlos III expelled the order from all Spanish territories.
The Augustinian Recollects took over the administration after the Jesuits and rebuilt this church. Its coral stone facade and intricate interiors whisper tales of Spanish colonial times. Signs of the Augustinian Recollects’ presence during that time are still evident as its seals are present in the doors, cornices, and church arches up to this day.

However, internal designs have changed since the 7.2 earthquakes that hit the province last October 15, 2013. Like all the other churches you may be visiting, check out how nature’s wrath and time have transformed this landmark in the city into an impressive view.
The Cathedral of San Jose in Tagbilaran City has been declared a diocesan shrine in acknowledgment of its significant role in the spiritual life of the Boholanos.
So, don't just pass through Tagbilaran during Lent. Stay a while, savor its charm, and let it be the springboard to an unforgettable Holy Week experience.
