This Week in Bacolod (July 22 to 28, 2018)

In Bacolod and in the province, the third week of July will bring thunderstorms and rain showers. Heavy downpour is expected on Monday, July 23. If you’re planning to hit the beach or hike in the mountain ranges of Negros Occidental, it is recommended to reschedule. According to Accuweather, the minimum temperature will be at 25 °C, while the maximum temperature will be at 31 °C [1].

The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) declared that drainage project along Lacson Street and parts of Barangay Mandalagan is now 85 percent complete [2]. However, heavy traffic is still expected this week along one of Bacolod's main roads until the construction is finished, which is projected by the end of the month. Motorists are advised by the DPWH to be extra careful since excavations are still taking place and slippery roads are inevitable due to the rainy season.

More equipment for security, comfort and convenience of the passengers are yet to be installed at the new sea port at the Bacolod Real Estate Development Corp. (BREDCO). Bredco’s new port is already open to passengers, but is not fully operational yet as more equipment are still anticipated to arrive. Since there is a new facility, there is a slight increase in terminal fees as the management wants tooperate the facility with world class standards. The port will be fully operational within the year [3].

A lot of initiatives have been done in order to beat plastic waste in the province, and one of them is at Sipaway Island. The city government of San Carlos initiated an underwater clean up in the waters of Sipaway and a coastal cleanup in nearby resorts as well. These initiatives aim to provide a cleaner environment for tourists especially those who loves traveling to the northern part of the province.

A section of the road passing through Purok Kulasi in Barangay Kumaliskis, Salvador Benedicto town, was restricted to one-lane traffic. This is because the stone masonry slope protection and road shoulder gave way after continuous heavy rains for many days. Motorists are advised to observe caution passing through the area near Malatan-og Falls to avoid accidents. [4].
