Canyoneering activities from Alegria to Badian resumed recently as the suspension order of the governor ended on August 31. Governor Hilario Davide, Jr. ordered the suspension of the canyoneering activities last June 1, 2016. This was based on a recommendation by the Cebu Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) pending the creation of guidelines to ensure the safety of the participants of the activity.

Prior to the lifting of the order, the PDRRMO inspected the personal protective equipment (PPE) used during canyoneering activities. All guides were required to go through the swift water rescue (SWR) and basic rope rescue (BPR) training courses.

The new guidelines also make it necessary for adventure-seekers to book with operators accredited by the municipal government. It also limits the number of guests participating in canyoneering activities to 75 guests from Tuesday to Thursday. On the other hand, 150 guests are allowed to join the activity from Friday to Sunday and during holidays. The canyoneering trail starts at an upland barangay in Alegria town and ends at Kawasan Falls in Badian town.

A Disneyland-inspired theme park will soon rise in Carmen, Cebu.

A theme park is set to be opened in a 400-hectare property of a Cebuano businessman, according to Cebu Province tourism consultant Patria Aurora “Dawnie” Roa. The Disneyland-inspired park will become the next big attraction in the tourism industry of Cebu. It will feature a zoo, farms, accommodations, and facilities for outdoor activities, among others. The park will be located in Carmen town, which is around 41 kilometers north of Cebu City. Roa added that the park will be a “grand tourism project” for the province and will become a major tourist destination in the island.

But Roa also said the main focus of the tourism office of the provincial government continues to be ecotourism. Vice Governor Agnes Magpale, chairperson of the Cebu Provincial Government tourism sector, is pushing for developing destinations which showcase the natural resources of the province.

Mandaue has a high number of unreported dengue cases

Mayor Gabriel Luis Quisumbing issued a heart alert against dengue after the Mandaue City Health Office did not receive an accurate report on a number of dengue cases. Mayor Quisumbing said city records indicated only 170 cases of dengue in Mandaue City from January to July. But the actual number of dengue cases is 550 since many of these cases have remained unreported. The mayor also tasked Dr. Edna Seno, the City Health Officer, to check on the number of dengue cases in the city. Mayor Quisumbing added that Cubacub, Labogon, and Casili have the highest number of dengue cases in the city.

Health authorities are also exercising precautions against the Zika virus. Renan Cimafranca, head of the Regional Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit Central Visayas Office of the Department of Health, said they are closely monitoring entry points for the Zika virus in Cebu, including airports and seaports.

Bureau of Quarantine (BOQ) 7 Director Dr. Terence Bermejo added that measures were taken across the region to facilitate timely detection and treatment of people afflicted by the virus. The BCQ set up thermal scanners at the Mactan-Cebu International Airport (MCIA). The agency also conducted insecticide spraying at the arrival area of the airport, the terminal, as well as areas within a 400-meter radius of the airport.
